How does one tell if a suit fits properly?
In a post-Mr Thom Browne world fit is a very subjective matter, but here's MR PORTER's
quickfire fit guide:
- The jacket collar needs to adhere to the shirt collar when the latter is buttoned up.
- The jacket's shoulders should extend fractionally beyond your shoulders, so that if you pass your hand up the top of the sleeve you just feel the edge of the shoulder pad.
- The jacket's chest should lie flat against your chest.
- The jacket should close around the waist without much room for manouvre, but without tugging.
- Jacket length is very personal but a useful guide is about level with your knuckles if you let your arms hang down and clench your fists.
- If the jacket has vents then they should lie flat, rather than pull open or kick up.
- Jacket sleeves should stop about four inches from the tip of your thumb, and reveal about a half-inch of shirtsleeve (assuming your shirt fits).
- Trousers should fit closely enough around the waist that a belt is a decorative rather than practical accessory.
- Suit trousers should just kiss the top of your shoes, rather than break on them.
