Three of the best new outerwear staples to take you from summer to autumn in style.

Another Tuesday, another influx of new products on MR PORTER. And despite there being almost too much to choose from, once again we have managed to pluck out three pieces with a unifying theme that has caught our attention, so we can present them for your perusal. Aren’t we good?

This week, we’re looking at jackets. Light, cool jackets. Jackets we can wear in warmer weather – and easily slip off if it gets too hot. Jackets that are so lightweight that they can be worn under a bigger coat when it gets a little colder. In short, here are three super versatile pieces of outerwear that pretty much anyone can wear.

First up is a denim jacket with a bit of a difference. Nigel Cabourn is inspired by all things vintage. To be precise, “Everything I design comes from either a moment in history, an inspirational person or a vintage garment,” says Mr Cabourn himself. As you can see, the above piece isn’t a classic denim jacket, but one with a workwear, utility feel to it. This is due to its length, and the fact that it is made from hardwearing “Lybro denim”. Lybro was a workers’ brand established in 1927 that used strong Japanese cotton, and its signature materials have since been resurrected by Cabourn to make some truly timeless pieces. We’ve long been fans of the young Parisian brand Ami. This jacket by Mr Alexandre Mattiussi caught our eye because of its pleasing retro appeal – putting us in mind of 1980s track jackets with its cropped cut and satin and flannel panels. Pairing this with anything similarly sporty would be a mistake (you don’t want to look like you’re fresh from the podium), so we advise wearing it open with a white T-shirt on beneath, or under an overcoat when it gets a little colder.

Now we’re going even further back in time than the 1970s and 1980s to the mid-century US – when workwear looked a little bit like this jacket from Outerknown – the eco-conscious casual brand from champion surfer Mr Kelly Slater and designer Mr John Moore. If you’re wary of your carbon footprint, then you can celebrate the fact that this has been made from recycled cotton. On the other hand, if you’re not too bothered about such things, just focus on the aesthetics of this stylishly relaxed camp-collar jacket in a pleasing emerald green. For those who find themselves on a sunny coast somewhere chasing the surf, pair this with some shorts. And if you’re anywhere else, blue jeans will go nicely.
