Our favourite street-style looks from New York Fashion Week: Men’s.
You don’t often associate fashion shows with feats of derring-do, but when it comes to New York, in the early months of the year, the two pretty much come together. Yes, the weather outside is frightful in the Big Apple right now, which makes it all the more impressive that its stylish denizens are braving the elements to stomp around in the slush and snow and see a few new clothes at New York Fashion Week: Men’s. What’s more, they look rather good doing it. In fact, in our opinion, New Yorkers are among the world’s best at throwing together outfits that are as weather-resistant as they are stylish. Scroll down to discover a few tips via our edit of the best street style from the event.

BUSINESS AND PLEASURE

Photograph by Mr Dane Isaac
This heavy wool, raglan-sleeved overcoat has a Mad Men era, business-like feel to it, particularly because it’s been paired with a grey suit and tie and classic leather gloves – so far, so serious. But it’s really lifted by the brightly coloured scarf – a sartorial non-sequitur that, we feel, is entirely welcome in these exceedingly grey conditions. It’s like Don Draper decided to live a little, and we like it.

A WELL-PLACED TURTLENECK

Photograph by Mr Karston Tannis
We often advise the wearing of turtlenecks to add a 1970s touch to a tailored outfit, blithely skimming over the crucial fact that, yes, they also keep your neck warm. Wearing one with a coat, as in the image above, can arguably do away with the need for a scarf, resulting in a far more streamlined, minimal look, if that’s your kind of thing. Beyond the pristine white sneakers (especially difficult to maintain on New York’s icy winter sidewalks), we also like the overall colour palette: shades of grey with a dash of red, for fun.

THE CANDID CAMEL

Photograph by Mr Karston Tannis
Although this man doesn’t look overly happy about having his picture taken, you can be sure it’s not because he’s anxious about how he looks. The stand-out piece here, his camel greatcoat is, well, really rather great – and, no doubt, extremely warm. As is his scarf which, were it any chunkier, might engulf his entire head. Not wanting to go overboard with his look, this man knows that two or three standout pieces is quite enough and goes with some simple black jeans and Derbies to finish things off.

CHECK, MATE

Photograph by Mr Karston Tannis
The feat of combining so many colours and patterns on such a dreary day, and with such subtlety, is really one that deserves a round of applause. Note here how this show-goer has employed three distinct shades but kept them all working together by making sure each individual piece has a bit of blue in it, from the checks on the blazer to the navy cardigan and light blue shirt, to the background colour of the paisley patterned scarf and pocket square. This is eccentric, English-style tailoring executed with real aplomb. And he doesn’t look too freezing either.

TOP MARKS

Photograph by Mr Karston Tannis
Who says you can’t channel a precocious six-year-old public school boy waiting to be picked up after class, and, not just avoid being arrested but look positively cool while doing it? Certainly not this guy. And, after seeing him mix a librarian-worthy Gucci jumper with a perfectly pitched shirt, tie and wool trouser combination – not us either. The parka jacket thrown over the top brings everything together perfectly. A for effort.
