The best trackies to field together – but maybe just at the weekend, eh?.

Never let it be said that we on MR PORTER’s Daily team are unwilling to eat our words. Or rather, eat our colleagues’ words. Yes, in April 2016, MR PORTER’s Associate Editor Mr Chris Elvidge wrote (in a piece entitled “The Dos and Don’ts of the Tracksuit Top”) that you should never “go full tracksuit”. But now we’re here to tell you that times have changed somewhat, and, in certain situations (ie, on the days of the week that begin with S), it’s now more acceptable to go for the matchy-matchy look. Why? Well, first of all, a bundle of high-end designers have shown matching track tops and sweatpants in their seasonal collections, including Gucci and Bottega Veneta (who fielded a particularly eye-catching pink variety for SS17). Then there’s the celebrities who are doing it well, musicians like Stormzy (who can forget the red adidas tracksuit he wore in his 2015 video for “Shut Up”) and Mr Zayn Malik, whose predilection for block-colour tracksuits (in particular, an olive coloured variety of 2016) has exerted a slow-burning, but powerful influence on style. Of course, there’s also the fact that a bundle of matching tracksuits have just turned up on MR PORTER. Sartorial etiquette aside, don’t you just want these? With apologies to Mr Elvidge, here’s our favourite three of the moment.

Twin brothers Messrs Adam and Ryan Goldston’s brand APL Athletic Propulsion Labs has named its new hooded sweatshirt “the perfect hoodie”. A bold claim, but one that comes with plenty of justification. Not only is it made from Japanese terry cotton, it boasts an intricate construction, with a back yoke and multi-panelled sleeves that make for a slim, tapered fit. Wear it with the matching “perfect” joggers, which come in an equally engineered skinny and tapered fit.

Mr Thom Browne’s take on the tracksuit draws inspiration from vintage college uniforms, hence the eye-catching asymmetric stripe details, which have become a recognisable signature of the brand in recent years. Though we wouldn’t recommend going running in this one (functional athletic wear has improved somewhat since those days of yore), it’s an excellent and stylish choice for weekend wear, made sturdily in Japan and with a flattering slim (but not too slim) fit that gives the whole thing an aura of sharpness that’s missing from your standard grey marl variety.

Italian brand Brunello Cucinelli specialises in simple, elegant and understated clothing made with the most meticulous attention to quality, detail and function. This tracksuit, which is designed with comfort in mind, comes in a premium cotton blend with just a touch of elastane, which means that it’s particularly well suited for all the kerfuffle you go through when climbing on board a plane.
