The big story at last night’s Grammys was, of course, 18-year-old Bond-theme-singer-in-waiting Ms Billie Eilish winning five awards, including Song of the Year and Best New Artist. Although we admire her for her success (and sparkly green ensemble), we, as purveyors of men’s clothing, are expected to use our editorial space for the men in attendance, even if they stand in her shadow where the prizes are concerned. So, without further ado, let us introduce to you the men that shone for us last night, even if it is more for their outfits rather than their career achievements.
Mr Shawn Mendes

It goes some way to explaining the extreme sartorial standards set by attendees of this year’s Grammys that the outfit worn last night by Mr Shawn Mendes was among the more conservative looks on display. That’s not a word you’d usually apply to a three-piece suit in… what colour even is this? Magenta? Fuchsia? Anyway, if there’s a reason the 21-year-old Mr Mendes looks so at ease, it’s probably because looks like these are right in his wheelhouse. In fact, he’s been pictured in so many colourful suits during the course of his short career that you could probably make a sartorial colour chart, like the one someone did for German Chancellor Ms Angela Merkel a while ago. (Google it.)
Mr Anderson .Paak

Not only did Mr Anderson .Paak win the award for the Best R&B Album last night, beating off competition from the likes of Lucky Daye and PJ Morton, he also gained unofficial accolades from us for this outfit. Looking more like a 1970s Miami narcotics baron than an award-winning musician, Mr .Paak masterfully mixes wide, loose tailoring – complete with a waistcoat – and smoother-than-cream loafers to louche, laid-back effect. The eyewear completes the look. No wonder he’s smiling.
Mr James Blake

With the Grammys red carpet full of looks intended to grab your attention, it’s refreshing to see an artist going for a look that isn’t a penguin tux but still makes a statement. Here, Mr James Blake looks quietly showy, wearing a jacket and wide-legged trousers by Mr Yohji Yamamoto, a designer known for moody and cerebral swathes of dark fabric. Mr Blake might have missed out on an award last night (and fake-sobbed about it afterwards with his girlfriend Ms Jameela Jamil), but he can take solace in the fact that he made our best-dressed list, which is almost as good.
Tyler, the Creator

This is not the first time Tyler, the Creator has made it onto the r/AccidentalWesAnderson reddit sub-thread and it is unlikely to be his last. In fact, after the debut of last night’s candyfloss-pink get-up from his own Golf Le Fleur line, we’re starting to think his pastel-soaked aesthetic is a deliberate attempt to get himself cast in the director’s next caper. It’s important to note that the reason this works is not just because he looks like he’s popped by on a break from his shift at the Grand Budapest Hotel, but because he has committed enough to pay close attention to the details: the hat, the white gloves and, crucially, the suitcase are the real stars here.
Beck

You can only really dress head to toe in Celine and starry sparkles if you’ve achieved something momentous in life, so 14 studio albums ought to do it. We wouldn’t, however, head out like this to your middle management job, even if you have won employee of the year twice in a row. Instead, why not pilfer a few things from Beck’s look rather than trying to pull off the whole thing? A colourful accessory wouldn’t go amiss at a formal function, for example, nor would some eye-catching sparkle on your tie. Give it a go.
