THE JOURNAL

The tie-dye T-shirt, the pastel sneakers and the belt bag we are currently eyeing up.
There are murmurs going around the office at the moment that the next big thing is going to be tailoring or, rather, various variations on that theme. Personally, though I’m still in the middle of the current thing, that is, workwear and denim and all things folksy and thrift-y, particularly as I rifle through the new arrivals on MR PORTER this week. (Needles! Wacko Maria! AMBUSH®!) Here are my favourite five pieces from that selection and how to wear them – forgive me if I haven’t moved on.
The Jacket

The T-Shirt
How many tie-dye T-shirts does a man need? I’ve done my own personal research and found the answer to this. The answer is: not many. But if you don’t already have one, I would heartily recommend this, perhaps the ultimate version, from The Elder Statesman. Lurid, eye-popping colours, exceptionally soft silk and cashmere-jersey… what’s not to like? Oh, OK, maybe one more then.

The Chinos
I spend a lot of my life talking and writing about chinos. That’s just how it is. What more is there to say? They are great, and will work for many different situations. There it is. But I particularly like the punchy green colour of this pair from Alex Mill – bright enough to add a bit of fun to a more neutral outfit, but sensible enough to tone down the acid colours in an extravagant tie-dye T-shirt. Yes, I think I may have a problem in this department.

The Sneakers
An upgrade for your classic Vans, made in Tuscany by Italian brand President’s and rendered in beautiful ice-creamy shades that are perfect for stepping into spring. Unless it’s a bit wet… I might need some Jason Markk spray for these ones.

The Bag
Yes, it’s a belt bag, and, yes, that is a trend, but you can be sure that anything from Patagonia has taken function and utility as a starting point in its design. This one is not too ostentatious, just big enough to hold your phone, keys and maybe a pack of sweets, should you need a sugar hit in your peregrinations, which, as far as I’m concerned, is plenty big.
