The durable workwear by Japanese American brand Engineered Garments that you want to work into your wardrobe. Try this jersey sweater, jacket, blazer and these cargo pants on for size.

Launched in 1999 by Japanese-born, New York-based designer and impresario Mr Daiki Suzuki, Engineered Garments is among a coterie of cult brands renowned for their incredible attention to detail and supreme integrity when it comes to product. For Mr Suzuki, clothing has been a lifelong obsession, from his early days in Aomori, north Japan, when he would compete with his friends to get the latest Sperry Top-Siders, to his work as a buyer and manager of the brilliant Nepenthes stores in Tokyo and New York. He created Engineered Garments at the cusp of the millennium to service his own need for sturdy, well-built American-made clothing, little of which was available at the time. Now the market is a little more crowded, but Engineered Garments still stands in its own class, thanks to the unbelievable amount of detailing in each garment. Scroll down to discover the first drop of the brand on MR PORTER, and how to wear it.

This jersey sweater is the perfect thing for a low-key weekend, thanks to its relaxed, raglan-sleeved fit. We’re also very keen on the side-stripes on the sleeves, a detail redolent of vintage military uniforms. Play up this influence by pairing it with a pair of Engineered Garments’ reversed sateen cargo pants, which come in a neat tapered fit. The myriad side-pockets will prove particularly handy for anyone who has just bought themselves an enormous iPhone 7.

This lightweight jacket in reversed sateen (that is, a cotton fabric with a pleasingly matt finish on the outside) is the kind of versatile, utilitarian piece that it’s always useful to have in your wardrobe. Throw it on when you’re running errands around the city, and consider taking this canvas tote with you, as it comes in a complementary grey.

Corduroy is a fantastic fabric for early autumn, given that it’s both hardwearing and relatively warm. It can work for smart-casual, given the right pairings, but you’ll also find it perfectly wearable in off-duty situations. This corduroy blazer is actually part of a suit, so if you want to go the whole hog, there is that option. But commitment-phobes will also find it easy to wear by itself, thrown over a white shirt with a vintage-styled oversized collar.
