From Mr Mahershala Ali to Mr Rami Malek – who took home our nod for wearing it well?.

Nobody hosted the Oscars this year. It was the first time this has happened at the ceremony since 1989, but despite apprehension from the press, it seems to have gone off without a hitch. If you’ve glanced at the news today, you’ll know that Ms Olivia Colman stole the show with her Best Actress win (and endearing “it’s genuinely quite stressful!” acceptance speech) and Mr Rami Malek took a tumble off the stage (he was fine). More importantly, though, what the hell did everyone wear? From Mr Mahershala Ali’s velvet beanie hat to Mr Chadwick Boseman’s glittering cape, this year it was all about doing something different. Here are the men who pulled it off.

Black Panther, the first Marvel Studios film to be nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award, may have missed out on the big gong, but Wakanda still boasted serious sartorial muscle in the form of Mr Chadwick Boseman. While we can’t confirm whether the star’s Givenchy sequined jacket was forged with genuine vibranium, it was certainly strong and seemingly charged with kinetic energy. And if the wide-legged trousers and dress shoes presented a break from the skin-tight Spandex, there was at least a nod to the superhero regalia, notably a train of cape-like proportions.

If The Favourite star was suffering from nerves at his first Oscars ceremony, it certainly didn’t show. Proof that by getting your outfit right, you’re already well ahead. Here, Mr Joe Alwyn stuck to what he’s been wearing so well throughout this awards season – a classic example of a black tuxedo – and ramped it up a notch. And while not the most adventurous ensemble on the red carpet, it was still in its own way bold. The jacket lapels, bow tie and contrasting shirt cuffs were all of a generous, 1970s-influenced scale, building on the young actor’s own confident swagger.

Named Best Supporting Actor for his role in Green Book, this might not have been Mr Mahershala Ali’s award-winning debut. He bagged his second Oscar, but as an actor wearing a beanie hat with a tux to the Academy Awards? We think this might be a first. Along with a mandarin-collar shirt from Ermenegildo Zegna XXX, the actor’s crowning garment was made by milliner Gigi Burris and is a nod to the Pakistani Jinnah cap. On paper, of course, all of this together might sound like a terrible idea, but put it on Mr Ali and hey presto! It’s a winner.

While his character in The Favourite may have preferred a powdered peruke and an habit à la française, Mr Nicholas Hoult himself opted for a slightly more sombre look for the red carpet. Wearing an all-black ensemble by Dior, the tuxedo was nonetheless head-turning and comprised a one-and-a-half breasted jacket with a pleated sash wrapped over the chest and around the back, inspired by a Dior dress from the 1950s.

Mr Rami Malek had quite a night at the Academy Awards. He won Best Actor for his role as Mr Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, and promptly tumbled from the stage into the audience area, was seen to by paramedics, but returned unscathed before posing for the traditional photograph alongside the other winners. He did all of this in an impeccably tailored suit by Saint Laurent and a Cartier watch, and looked the part all the way. “The Show Must Go On,” after all.
