Three Tips On How To Wear A Tux From Last Night’s British Fashion Awards.

Although we were as surprised as anyone to see Ms Meghan Markle at the British Fashion Awards last night, we must admit that our attention was commanded by the variety of tuxes on show at the Royal Albert Hall. We are no anti-royalists here at MR PORTER, but, shallow creatures that we are, we’re more in the business (quite literally) of seeing what men are wearing at the moment, and how we’re all pulling off formalwear. For an event which touts itself as recognizing creativity and innovation in fashion, it was little surprise that the male guests followed suit in their sartorial philosophy. There were many excellent examples of tuxedos amongst the A-list guests (Mr David Beckham, Mr Rami Malek and Mr Chiwetel Ejiofor, to name a few) but the three below are our favourites, and, in our opinion, best represent the creative variety on show.

It’s hard to think of a more popular musician in Britain right now than Mr Matt Healy. His magpie approach to creating music sees his band The 1975 cover pop, garage, rock and everything in between on their latest album A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships. And if that wasn’t enough to appeal to teenagers and middle-agers alike, Mr Healy’s open approach to interviews and boyish (but bedraggled) good looks only add to the intrigue. Here, he smartens up with an uncharacteristically understated approach to wearing a tux. There are classic touches, such as the cummerbund (itself something of a rebellion in 2018) and the slim lapels. But his bow tie is smaller than your average, making him stand out despite wearing all black.

Back in 2012, British high-street stalwart Marks & Spencer recorded a 50 per cent spike in the sale of men’s swimwear off the back of a campaign fronted by model Mr Oliver Cheshire. It’s a fact worth considering if you currently have a rich chocolate-coloured double-breasted tuxedo sitting idly in your Wish List. Tapping into the buzz around all things 1970s, this outfit plays with – and elevates – the stylings of the decade with great success. It also proves that not only can you wear brown in town, but you can stretch your autumnal hues well into winter. Another thing to note: the best use of an oversized bow tie this side of Mr Donald Glover.

Menswear designer Mr Charlie Casely-Hayford has previously lent his considerable styling chops to The xx, Nas and Mr Sam Smith. It should come as no surprise, then, that he brings a certain flair to his own line of eveningwear. Here, his jacket comes embellished with a jacquard print ensuring it really pops on the red carpet. But, as with any more outlandish piece – especially in the context of a formal occasion such as this – it pays to first build on a solid foundation, here a classic tux silhouette, and, as ever, keep the rest of your outfit fairly muted.
