THE JOURNAL

A winning combination of clothes to keep you warm and comfortable when you’re watching your favourite sport in action.
Premier League football has already kicked off, Major League Baseball is in full swing, the NFL season is on the horizon and the US Open is about to serve up some tennis gold, so regardless of whether you prefer watching people throw, hit, punt or bounce a ball, there’s undoubtedly an athletic event happening in your chosen sport very, very soon. We may not be able to guarantee good weather at such happenings, or recommend any sort of good luck charms to ensure the best team comes out on top, but being sartorially minded folks here at MR PORTER, we can ensure you win in the style stakes this season. Here’s how to stay warm, comfortable and cool in the stands.
UP ABOVE
The most obvious choice for such an occasion is naturally the strip of your home team. But if you aren’t lucky enough to own a kit – or are reluctant to remove your personalised and signed jersey from its frame – you might need to consider an alternative way to show your support. Equally, if you have somewhere less sporting to be after the match, we would recommend avoiding garish insignia (or sticking to removable items like a scarf) and choosing instead simple, warm and weatherproof pieces. Pay homage to the football casuals such as Britpop icons Messrs Noel and Liam Gallagher with a sporty long-sleeved Lacoste polo shirt, in a subtle mottled charcoal. Wear it buttoned up under a light padded bomber jacket, such as this midnight blue one from minimalist Parisian brand A.P.C., and head off safe in the knowledge that you can blend in with any crowd.
DOWN BELOW
Considering the fact that you’ll be sitting for extended periods – and hopefully jumping out of your seat for the exciting bits – it pays to put on some comfortable trousers. Sweatpants are for those who are actually partaking in the sport on the day, so spectators should opt for a sturdy pair of jeans. These in particular from Frame denim come lightly distressed and made from a stretchy, form-fitting denim for added flexibility. Sneakers are an obvious footwear choice, and Converse’s all-white Chuck Taylor All Stars are arguably some of the most iconic out there. They’re also incredibly supple and surprisingly hardwearing, and look just as good weathered – so will have no problem being stepped on while you’re queuing for a pie, hot dog or other deliciously greasy stadium snack.
THE ACCESSORIES
A watch will be your best friend on the day, ensuring you arrive promptly to those all-important pre- and post-game pints. Don’t go for anything too flashy and favour practical pieces like this utilitarian timpiece from US brand Shinola, crafted in stainless steel with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal lens. The large numbers will also come in handy after the aforementioned drinks have taken their toll. You can disguise any visible signs of wear later on with a nice pair of shades – which will also be useful if the sun comes out. Again, favour simplicity with the above tortoiseshell Ray-Ban sunglasses in the timeless Wayfarer style.
