For a casual day in summer, a pair of chinos and a button-down Oxford shirt are easily dressed up, and a suit is easily dressed down, with a knitted silk tie. In the coming season that sense of informality can be retained, but given a fresh look, by switching from silk to wool. The most obvious result of making a tie from wool, or cashmere, rather than from silk, is that it won't be shiny. This visual quality instantly renders woollen ties discreetly unusual, and gives them a relaxed feel. For the same reason, they're best suited to daytime wear, when their fuzzy appeal is clear for all to see.
