Men of note
Words by Mr Tom M Ford

Beginning life in the dorms of Leeds University more than five years ago, this British four-piece signed to Infectious Records in 2011. Their atmospheric debut An Awesome Wave was released in May this year, and its inventive approach made them deserved winners of last month's Mercury Music Prize - which recognises the best albums in the UK. Now selling out shows in both the US and Europe, innovation embodies everything from their name (the Mac keyboard command for the Greek letter Delta) to music videos - YouTube favourite "Tessellate" is "a twist on Raphael's 'The School of Athens'". With fans all over the globe, Alt-J's angular tunes are certainly here to stay. Catch them on their world tour here and buy the album here.

"Lay Your Cards Out"
Poliça

"I had Spotify Radio on when I came across this track while we were driving across California and it all made perfect sense. It's such a beautiful piece of music. The vocals are gorgeous. Tracks like this always make me feel humble."
"I Don't Like"
Kanye West

"The melody on this is hard-core. It's a massive club tune. It sounds new too, which I have to respect Kanye for."
"Your GF Likes it Ruff"
Mensah

"There's not a great deal of Mensah's music out there, which obviously makes him 10 times cooler. Dubstep is changing a lot at the moment with subgenres sprouting out all the time but Mensah's still got the core sounds that people love."
"Missing You"
John Talabot

"The simplicity here is mesmerising. I imagine most people will like it as it's kind of like DJ/ producer SBTRKT. It's addictive yet relatively unknown which people always like to associate with."
"Oblivion" (DJ Sliink Remix)
Grimes

"The original is great, but I'm beginning to forget what it even sounded like because I like this version so much. DJ Sliink is one of the best remixers I've heard. Everything he's done is just seriously cool."
