Previously a designer at labels including Calvin Klein and J.Crew, Mr Richard Haines now dedicates his talents to street-style illustration. Based in New York City, where he sketches everything from store windows to stylish passers-by with an immediacy more often found in photography, he posts his work on his popular website, What I Saw Today, and has collaborated with leading publications and brands including The Sunday Times and Prada. "I started my blog because I love sketching and thought it would be another way to market myself as a designer," he says. "It was also because I've lived in New York for a long time and I'm constantly recharged by what I see on the streets - it's a constant flow of ideas, looks and groups and it never really stops. I just want to acknowledge what I see around me."

This season we're delighted that Mr Haines is reporting directly from the menswear shows and presentations in Florence and Milan for MR PORTER, armed with his trusty sketch pad and pencil. "When I sketch people I get to meet them. I realised when I started doing this that the more I spoke to people, the more relaxed they became, and the more I got the essence of them; all this combines to make a more personal portrait. It's not just about fashion, it's about the person behind the image too."
