Words by Mr Chris Elvidge, Senior Copywriter, MR PORTER

Red carpet fashion adjudication can be a ruthless business at the best of times - especially for the female attendees, who can expect to be filed past a bank of waiting photographers, subjected to confusing lines of questioning ("Who are you wearing?") and sorted into "winners" and "losers" before they've even set foot in the theatre. Men have it easier, what with the rigidity inherent in the dress code - but there's still plenty of scope for experimentation, and this year's Oscars ceremony was no exception. The take-home point? White was the story of the night, with both Messrs Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto opting for a white dinner jacket, while Mr Jeremy Renner chose a white bow tie.
