Mr Todd Snyder's résumé reads like a who's who of menswear: after studying textile and clothing design at the state university in his native Iowa, and spending time at the local haberdashers Badowers, he moved to New York City. There, he first designed outerwear for Polo Ralph Lauren, before becoming director of menswear at Gap and subsequently senior vice president of menswear at J.Crew. It's largely thanks to Mr Snyder (whose surname happens to mean "one who makes outer garments" in Dutch) that J.Crew was transformed into the menswear powerhouse that it is today, with its stylish casualwear and tailoring offer, and covetable collaborations with the likes of Timex and Red Wing Shoes.
This is an aside, though, because we are here to focus on Mr Snyder's impressive own label, which he launched in fall/ winter 2011, and which we are now delighted to stock on MR PORTER. Informed by the craftsmanship of Savile Row and the rigours of military tailoring, the Todd Snyder brand matches faultless quality with a distinctly "New York" style sensibility that is evident in its preppy and heritage-inspired aesthetics. In the label's spring/ summer 2014 collection, a chambray shirt with rolled-up sleeves is teamed with slightly cropped check trousers and a pair of leather Derbies (minus socks), hinting at the sort of Ivy League Americana that continues to inspire a generation of men's style.
