To-do lists, shopping lists, bucket lists. We live our lives by lists, compulsively ticking them off in a relentless pursuit of task-oriented efficiency. It can be exhausting. Allow us to suggest a subversion of these lists with one of a different kind: a line-up of terrific new books you might consider reading during your forthcoming summer holiday, when the only items on your agenda should be 1) Relax, 2) Recharge, 3) Replenish.
It's the time of year when you are least beholden to the daily checkboxes of life and work, when you're feeding your mind instead of the machine. It's your list for the listless, lengthy days of summer, and should be treated as such. You do not have to cross all of these books off. This is not a curriculum and there will be not be an exam. Just pick the ones that appeal - to your sense of adventure, humour, or enquiry - from our carefully edited selection, above, and read them in your own sweet time for the sheer pleasure of it.
