There's a picture that sums up the power of a pair of mirrored sunglasses like no other. Taken in 1974, it shows Mr Robert Redford arriving at a party at the New York home of the philanthropist Ms Mary Lasker. Dressed in coat and tie and a pair of mirrored aviators, the actor projects an air of effortless composure.
It's something made all the more impressive for the fact that the man behind the lens that day was none other than the self-anointed "king of the paparazzi", Mr Ron Galella - a New York-based photographer whose notoriously intrusive tactics not only saw him slapped with a restraining order by Ms Jackie Onassis, but also landed him with a broken jaw and five missing teeth courtesy of an exasperated Mr Marlon Brando. If Mr Redford shared even a hint of Ms Onassis or Mr Brando's irritation, though, he didn't let it show. And key to this cool exterior were his sunglasses: like a one-way mirror in an interrogation room, they gave him the power to hide in plain sight.
Of course, it's not just A listers evading the glare of paparazzi cameras who stand to benefit from this. Any man who has been caught staring on the beach (hey, it's natural) appreciates the covert properties of a good pair of mirrored sunglasses, and that's why, with summer finally here, we've picked out six pairs perfect for keeping furtive glances under wraps. Some of them are just as good at drawing attention as Mr Redford's were at keeping it at bay, too, so they might even ensure that the girls stare back - for all the right reasons, of course.
