Words by Mr Tom M Ford
From a performance at our Billy Reid launch party in London last year, to an acoustic session in a Nashville meat-packing factory - MR PORTER and Tennessee rockers The Apache Relay like to keep encounters eclectic.
Formed in 2009 after lead singer Mr Michael Ford Jr and guitarist Mr Mike Harris met in a Nashville college dorm, debut album 1988 and last year's American Nomad, released on indie label Thirty Tigers, have been praised for their rich, rock'n'roll sound. "I've always been drawn to rock music," says Mr Ford Jr when I catch up with him on tour. "Some of the other guys have been drawn to folk. We like anything from Radiohead to 1960s Motown. It's a case of everyone channelling their influences into one."
With more than 100 tour dates in 2011, including an opening spot for folk giants Mumford & Sons, the band shows no signs of respite this year, especially relishing the opportunity to perform for us. "We've been touring the US, Canada and the UK since last winter and for the most of this year. It's a lot of fun to do the stripped-down thing because we're always playing a big rock'n'roll show. It keeps us on our toes."
With a commendable work ethic and passion for looking good ("We have a respect for fashion and dress in a way that makes us feel confident") it is with little surprise that Mr Ford Jr and co blend music and style so effortlessly in our video. Enjoy.
