Words by Mr Tom M Ford
Founder of revered record label Mad Decent, superstar DJ and go-to producer for everyone from Beyoncé to No Doubt, Diplo, aka Mr Thomas Pentz, is a busy man. Born in Mississippi, he has a penchant for niche genres such as Brazilian baile funk, while he produced M.I.A.'s 2008 Grammy-nominated smash "Paper Planes". The 33-year-old has three solo albums and is set to release his second album as Major Lazer - a futuristic dancehall project with DJ Switch. A columnist for Vanity Fair, Mr Pentz also finds time to model for Alexander Wang (a label coming soon to MR PORTER) and is executive producer on Snoop Dogg's upcoming reggae album. Leading up to his 19 August set at club Privilege in Ibiza (just one of "300-plus shows" he does a year), Mr Pentz gave us his essential DJ playlist.
Lifelike & Kris Menace
"A tune that's before my time on the island, but the vibe (the video was shot in Ibiza) is of a sweet Barcelona chick drifting off into ecstasy at a villa."
"'Get Out My Head' - a crazy tune with the same percussive organ as 'Show Me Love' but enough aggression to make you jump up and down."
"Save the World"
Swedish House Mafia
"Swedish House Mafia continues to take over the world and this tune has everlasting appeal with its gigantic chorus and feel-good mentality."
"The siren horn, big sweeps and bass-line loop: this is a big tune right here - I use a special version I made with vocals in our Major Lazer live carnival."
"Feel So Close"
"This song says, 'Hug me, I'm ecstatic'. From the warm guitar chords to the vocals, he's that big bro that wants you to have a good time. Let's party!"
"I Follow Rivers"
"Ibiza DJs are known for winding-down, post-dawn sets. This is perfect for when you want to just sit in a chair by a pool. Your mind can sing along - it works."
