When you think of a backpack, what springs to mind? The tattered leather satchel crammed with textbooks that you carried to school as a boy? Or perhaps the ones lugged about by gap-year travellers - those of such proportions, and so overstuffed with T-shirts, mosquito repellent and cheap Thai whisky, that the wearer is constantly on the verge of falling over backwards?
The unfortunate truth is that when it comes to stylish, wearable luggage for the man about town, the backpack comes with, well, baggage. This is unfortunate, as the benefits they offer over briefcases, totes and holdalls are obvious - especially if you travel by bicycle.
We're happy to report, however, that any negative associations can be cast aside, as a refined new breed of backpack has arrived that offers all of the hands-free practicality without being short on style. We chose six of the best. To see them, click through the gallery above.
