Mr Roberts's Recommendations

FAVOURITE RESTAURANT AND DISH

Le Gavroche in London might be traditional, but the service is among the best in the world. It's perfect for a more formal meal, and any dish is a good choice. I do like Hix Oyster & Fish House in Lyme Regis too – it has an amazing view and the best fish and chips anywhere.”

BEST BAR

“I prefer decent pubs to bars, although The Connaught Bar is perfect for a late-night drink, while Soho House still delivers a great, relaxed (for LA) ambience and amazing views. Mews in Mayfair is also ideal for a very late night... As for pubs, The Punch Bowl in Mayfair and The Flask in Highgate are relaxed yet still manage to feel like real pubs.”

TOP CITY

“I've been lucky enough to travel to many cities in all parts of the world but have found none better than London. That said, Berlin has a very cool and progressive attitude and lots of good restaurants and bars. It may not be fashionable in Europe to say so, but I like Santa Monica in LA. Sun, beaches, space, and beautiful people...”

FAVOURITE HOTEL

The Connaught effortlessly combines traditional values with a modern approach and is the most comfortable hotel to stay in. It doesn't feel like "just a hotel". Plus it has the best pillows in the world.”

note

TYPE OF BAG

“A still-beautiful Louis Vuitton satchel given to me by a friend.”

note

ESSENTIAL WARDROBE ITEM

“I've got a "thing" about knitted ties. They need to be from either Douglas Hayward on Mount Street or Richard James . They are so useful and can be worn formally or informally. They don't crease and so travel well, and are just a bit different from the rest of the "suits".”

note

MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN

“She knows who she is.”

STYLE ICON

“With so many well-known people all having stylists it seems easier to look backwards than at today. It's hard to get past Robert Redford and Paul Newman in the 1960s and 1970s. They just did it without trying in an age when they didn't have to be concerned about being judged by social media. Proper men.”

note

STYLE TIP

“Know what colours work for you and stick to them. When it works, it works. Don't deviate. Also, just keep everything simple.”

note

TAILOR

“I love Rake for its attention to detail, and with its new flagship store it's the perfect place to drop in to get suits altered and made.”

BEST SHIRT BRAND

“I am really getting on well with Richard James shirts at the moment; a good choice of styles and they fit so well. Apparently they iron well too...”

FAVOURITE SUIT

“It's hard to choose between Rake and Spencer Hart . The versatility of Rake is so important – it makes them a good buy as well as desirable. Spencer Hart makes great suits for cool occasions.”

CUT OF TROUSERS

Incotex chinos are beautifully made and have a stylish cut without being overly trendy. A confident choice.”

JEANS BRAND

“The 1947 Levi's 501 XX in selvedge denim from North Carolina is timeless and incredibly versatile. For something a little more trendy Acne is a good choice.”

UNDERWEAR CHOICE

Sunspel make the best basics. For T-shirts, polo shirts and underwear they are the essential choice. Good basics should be just that – unfussy and understated.”

PREFERRED JACKET STYLE

“All modern stylish men need a few good coats in their wardrobe. They should be a length that works for the individual. In winter Aspesi is my preferred choice – for pretty much any situation.”

SHOE MAKER

“Crockett & Jones for formal, Tod's for summer and Nike for fun.”

FAVOURITE GROOMING PRODUCT

“Pankhurst grooming products smell great and work. That's all you need.”

DREAM CAR

“A 2008 Bentley Brooklands.”

WATCH BRAND

“It's hard to beat Rolex. A fact that you have to accept about wearing a Rolex is that they are not particularly exclusive. However, this doesn't make them any less desirable, especially the vintage models. A Patek Philippe Nautilus is my secret mistress though.”
