BEST BAR
“La Folie, Polk Street, San Francisco. They do a great margarita with Patrón silver tequila.”
VACATION CHOICE
“I have no routine. The list of places to go is too long.”
TOP CITY
“San Francisco. I love the light, being surrounded by water, the steep hills and layered cityscapes. There's a can-do attitude, a creative spirit and a lot of tech buzz.”
FAVOURITE HOTEL
“The Dylan Hotel in Amsterdam - central location but set back off a canal. It felt like everything had been considered and cared about but it wasn't fussy.”
TYPE OF BAG
“It's actually an art case that I bought in Tokyu Hands, Tokyo, Japan. It's large, flat, black and white – perfect for a large MacBook. The brand is really obscure, called Hem, and it has a random tag line that reads 'Thousand Pocket Thread Texture of Curiosity'. A great example of 'Japlish'.”
FAVOURED BRAND
“I'm certainly biased, but I'm a big fan of E. Tautz . We worked closely with Patrick Grant on the E. Tautz identity to convey its history as a military and sporting outfitters. I was thrilled to see Patrick win best menswear designer at the British Fashion Awards. To me, E. Tautz is simple, confident materials with the structure and cut of Savile Row.”
ESSENTIAL WARDROBE ITEM
“A thick grey wool jacket from Engineered Garments. It's a short jacket that I can wear for any occasion, and it never creases.”
MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN
“Ah, what a trap. I've met her, but you don't know her.”
STYLE ICON
“Chevy Chase.”
STYLE TIP
“Don't take it too seriously. Leave people wondering 'why?' about one aspect of your attire.”
TAILOR
“I use Norton & Sons, Savile Row for the important stuff. Otherwise I just let things deteriorate, moth-eaten wool looks better.”
BEST SHIRT BRAND
“Most of my shirts are from Mr Start, Rivington Street, London. I like the fact they are high quality light cotton, simple patterns, slim cut with very slim collars. I have also had some great Comme des Garçons shirts.”
FAVOURITE SUIT
“Norton & Sons, or E. Tautz depending on budget, I like the play on heritage, chunky materials, simple lines.”
CUT OF TROUSERS
“I am mainly in jeans.”
UNDERWEAR CHOICE
“I'm boring. White boxer shorts, the plainer the better.”
PREFERRED JACKET STYLE
“Single button, slim fit, well turned lapel, thick material but 'ghost-lined' (partial lining) so it's not too warm to wear.”
SHOE MAKER
“Trickers - Acorn tan brogue Bourton shoes – I think you could probably murder someone in them and they'd still think you were a perfect gentleman.”
FAVOURITE GROOMING PRODUCT
“I have a face cream from Ren. It's a small product, light but it works.”
DREAM CAR
“OK, that's more like it. Probably one of the early Ford GT40s, or perhaps the Aston DBRS9 GT3, the one they used for the 24-hour Le Mans. Or a Vector W8 (very rare) – looks like it was designed entirely with a ruler. I could go on...”
WATCH BRAND
“A blue plastic ToyWatch. I like the fact it's an ironic take on a Rolex.”
ESSENTIAL GADGET
“Canon 5D mark II DSLR camera. Best with a prime lens. It shoots beautiful stills or footage – amazing.”
BEST BOOK
“Duncton Wood by William Horwood. It's like Watership Down but with moles instead of rabbits. Don't ask.”
FAVOURITE ALBUM
“Takk, by Icelandic band Sigur Rós. It is expansive, soaring, stunning.”
