Mr Barat's Recommendations

FAVOURITE RESTAURANT AND DISH

Dean Street Townhouse. Steak.”

BEST BAR

The Nightjar in Old Street.”

Great seafood and a mellow atmosphere
Great seafood and a mellow atmosphere

VACATION CHOICE

“Morocco is vastly different from anywhere else. It seems very timeless and untouched by the outside world. Essaouira has a beautiful ancient medina, and Hendrix and Dylan hung out there in the Sixties.”

TOP CITY

“My favourite city is London. It's vast and full of mystery, adventure and life. It changes utterly from one street to another and it is my home.”

FAVOURITE HOTEL

“I'm rather partial to The Grafton in LA. It's at the centre of everything I need and they provide you with a free plastic frog.”

note

TYPE OF BAG

“If I can't find anybody else to carry my personal effects to work, I favour a good old-fashioned Gladstone bag. Occasionally, however, I'll buckle under the weight of a necessity for comfort and plump for a wheelie suitcase.”

FAVOURED BRAND

“My favourite brand of late is Zadig & Voltaire. It seems that they always have what I'm looking for, quite simple, well made and not too ostentatious.”

ESSENTIAL WARDROBE ITEM

“The most essential item in my wardrobe would be a good leather belt. For one, it keeps my trousers up, but beyond that it centres me and helps me gauge how tubby I'm becoming.”

MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN

“My beloved aside, I'll go for Natalie Portman. I think I can get away with that.”

STYLE ICON

“Although it's a little obvious, I'd have to say James Dean. He always wore simple, staple clothes that framed him so well and not the other way round. I suppose that's the definition of being well dressed.”

note

STYLE TIP

“Do what makes you feel good and be happy about it.”

note

TAILOR

Maggie Cassidy's (Bespoke Tailoring).”

note

BEST SHIRT BRAND

“I favour my Lindberg shirts. They seem to have just the right collars.”

note

FAVOURITE SUIT

“I'd say Dior, but then I do have my eye on a couple of Lanvin numbers.”

note

CUT OF TROUSERS

“I don't really wear trousers per se, unless they're jeans or suit trousers. I wore some trousers from The Kooples the other day that seemed to tick all the boxes for me. Good material, well shaped, etc.”

note

JEANS BRAND

“At the moment that would be my grey skinny-fit Zadig & Voltaires.”

note

UNDERWEAR CHOICE

“I've always gone for the Calvin Klein Underwear boxers, as these were deemed the height of style and luxury in my early band days. They're generally pretty durable too.”

note

PREFERRED JACKET STYLE

“A good leather one generally. Not too big and buckley, not too thin and weedy.”

note

SHOE MAKER

“A classic English brogue has for a long time been my favourite, but I don't wear them so much now as I tend to slip over due to the lack of traction on the sole. On the flip side, I'm getting back into my vintage Doc Martens when the mood suits.”

note

FAVOURITE GROOMING PRODUCT

“I find a little seawater spray can liven up a flagging barnet.”

DREAM CAR

“I wouldn't say no to James Bond's car in The Spy Who Loved Me. I don't drive though.”

WATCH BRAND

“I had a Timex but it broke.”

ESSENTIAL GADGET

“My fancy corkscrew is mega.”

BEST BOOK

“There are many, but I think the only book I've ever read twice is Catch 22 by Joseph Heller. Very funny.”

FAVOURITE ALBUM

“I think my favourite album is Loaded by the Velvet Underground. I've loved it for so long it feels like a part of me.”
