Mr Rookwood's Recommendations

FAVOURITE RESTAURANT AND DISH

Quay in Sydney, Australia's best restaurant. Ask for a table in the Upper Tower which has 270-degree views of the harbour with the Opera House on one side and the Harbour Bridge on the other. Have the taster menu but make sure you order the mud crab congee to start and the snow egg to finish.”

note

BEST BAR

“There's a place in Melbourne called MoVida Next Door which is difficult to beat for some tapas and a glass of wine at the bar. There's also nothing like a cooling Coopers Pale ale in the bar at North Bondi Italian Food after a hot day on the beach.”

VACATION CHOICE

“When I lived in Australia, I loved hopping over to New Zealand which is just the most ridiculous film set of a country - a place where you can ski and surf in the same day. Now that we've moved back to London, we're making the most of having Europe on our doorstep and I cannot get enough of Italy.”

note

TOP CITY

“Sydney is just the right size, the restaurants are amazing, the coffee even better, and the beach makes you feel like you're on holiday every weekend.”

FAVOURITE HOTEL

“The best hotels I've ever stayed in are Cape Kidnappers in New Zealand and the Lake Palace in Udaipur, India. I'm a big fan of a long weekend away and my wife and I like small, well-designed boutique hotels.”

TYPE OF BAG

“I have different bags depending on what I am wearing and doing. These range from a navy WANT Les Essentiels de la Vie tote to a beige canvas Barbour satchel to a chocolate brown leather Mulberry messenger bag to a bright green Seil Marschall rucksack (worn on both shoulders). But what I really want is a tan leather Swaine Adeney Brigg document case.”

FAVOURED BRAND

“As a Style Director I ought not to say. But I will anyway. For suiting I love Thom Sweeney, Rake and E. Tautz. For more casual wear, I love Oliver Spencer, Paul Smith and YMC . Plus I still unashamedly buy a lot of Topman, Uniqlo and Cos because they are brilliant value.”

ESSENTIAL WARDROBE ITEM

“I'd have to say my tortoiseshell Ralph Lauren glasses (Polo 2066P since you ask) - because I can't see a thing without them.”

note

MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN

“Apart from my wife, Sam? Miranda Kerr on the Victoria's Secret catwalk.”

note

STYLE ICON

“Tom Ford is immaculate. I have a bit of a man-crush on Ryan Gosling. And I do admire the debonair styling of my friend Patrick Grant of 'Norts & Tautz' fame. I'm looking forward to the get-the-look impact that the forthcoming remake of The Great Gatsby will doubtless have.”

note

STYLE TIP

“Wear clothes that fit you well and are appropriate for your age and wear them the way they are supposed to be worn. That means if wearing a tie, do up your top button and tie it properly with a little dimple below the knot. If wearing leather shoes, polish them. Also, it's better to be slightly over dressed than under dressed.”

note

TAILOR

“In my job it would be wrong to have a single tailor. That would be like a restaurant critic only eating at one restaurant. As for alterations, I would get them done by the original tailor where possible.”

BEST SHIRT BRAND

“I met the lovely Northern Irish couple who run Smyth & Gibson recently and they measured me up for a shirt that made me see for the first time the true benefit of a bespoke shirting.”

FAVOURITE SUIT

“My current favourites include Thom Sweeney, E. Tautz , Rake, A. Sauvage – the new wave of Mayfair. Plus also Tiger of Sweden. I got married in a bespoke Richard James suit that I love.”

CUT OF TROUSERS

“I am enjoying wearing slim-fit colourful chinos and needle cords. Topman do a great selection. I also have a pair of light blue and white seersucker trousers from Ralph Lauren that I love wearing on holiday.”

JEANS BRAND

“I go for slim-fit indigo selvedge denim with no distressing. The Scandinavian brands do this well - the likes of Nudie Jeans and Acne Studios .”

UNDERWEAR CHOICE

“I like a loose boxer short in plain white cotton (or pale blue if feeling adventurous). Derek Rose , Sunspel and J.Crew make the best classic boxers.”

PREFERRED JACKET STYLE

“My cropped double-breasted jackets are getting a lot of wear at the moment. But the most versatile jacket I have which I always pack is a single-button, single-breasted navy travel blazer from Banana Republic that will not crease. I can dress it up with a shirt and tie and pocket square or go casual with a button-down chambray shirt and chinos or very casual with a breton T-shirt and tailored shorts.”

SHOE MAKER

“I own more pairs of Goodyear-welted brogues than is strictly necessary - such as Church's , Trickers, Loake and Grenson . I also love my black leather John Lobb Oxfords. All of these shoes should last me for life with the occasional service once a decade. For something more 'now', I do love a Mark McNairy suede desert/chukka boot with a contrast rubber sole in a bold colour. And I have white Converse All-Stars on repeat order.”

FAVOURITE GROOMING PRODUCT

“Whisper it, but Garnier Anti Dark Circle eye roller covers up a big night out. I got a Philips Sonicare Diamond Clean electric toothbrush recently and it is amazing.”

note

DREAM CAR

“A mint condition early 1960s Mercedes-Benz 280SL Pagoda convertible in silver. And an early 1970s Citroen DS - maybe in a navy blue. But that week I spent last September hairpinning around the Amalfi coast in a bright red 1960s Alfa Romeo Spider convertible will take some beating too.”

note

WATCH BRAND

“I wear a joke watch at the moment (a kitsch digital Casio) while I weigh up the arm candy I really want. I’d love a Patek Philippe – who wouldn’t? – but I'd be too scared to wear it. It’d be great to have a vintage Rolex Oyster, but the brand I really like at the moment is Zenith. And I also admire what Nick and Giles English are doing with their British watch brand, Bremont.”

ESSENTIAL GADGET

“Once you’ve had Mac, you can't go back. I am never without my iPhone 4S and rarely without my MacBook Pro and/or iPad. But then I also love my Montblanc Meisterstuck fountain pen for a handwritten thank you letter.”

BEST BOOK

“I love Captain Corelli's Mandolin by Louis de Bernieres. Any Human Heart by William Boyd is just superb. The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger is the only book I have read thrice and it's meant something different each time.”

note

FAVOURITE ALBUM

“The Stones Roses eponymous first album because it was the soundtrack to my formative years. I'm ridiculously excited about their reformation, but also nervous because it can't possibly live up to the hype.”
