Mr Millar's Recommendations

note

FAVOURITE RESTAURANT AND DISH

“Can Boix in Vilamari, which is 2km from my house in Catalunya. A selection of tapas to start, followed by the filet with a port or ratafia sauce. Or anywhere in any city that serves oysters and champagne before 10am.”

note

BEST BAR

“Sundowners in Biarritz, France. It doesn't matter as long as you can see the sea, the sky and the sinking sun.”

note

VACATION CHOICE

“I'm a big fan of islands. Especially ones inhabited by expats – the decadent mentality suits holidaying well. My wife comes from French Mauritian stock; that's not a bad place to start.”

TOP CITY

“Hong Kong for madness. Paris for decadence. London for eclecticism.”

FAVOURITE HOTEL

“I try to always stay in different hotels wherever I go. I like being a stranger. The only hotel that breaks this rule is Babington House in Somerset, England. Being an expat Brit I appreciate its dreamlike Englishness. I like feeling at home there.”

TYPE OF BAG

“A Race Bag by Rapha, one of their first, which has done more than 10 Grand Tours with me.”

FAVOURED BRAND

Paul Smith for his English eccentricity. Tom Ford for his ability to make both men and women look beautiful.”

note

ESSENTIAL WARDROBE ITEM

Sunspel polo. The history of the original design adds to the perfection. I always wear them come summer.”

note

MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN

“Nicole Millar, bien sur.”

STYLE ICON

“James Dean, Steve McQueen, Coco Chanel, Serge Gainsbourg, Tom Ford, Paul Smith, and Velo Club Rocacorba. They are faithful to their style, and they understand how to transmit who they are into how they look.”

note

STYLE TIP

“Being drunk when you get dressed. It always works out for the best.”

TAILOR

“Alterations are done at Pujadas in Girona. It's an old family business, walking in to the shop is like stepping back in time. Timothy Everest is my tailor. Although I'm waiting to see how my old schoolmate from Hong Kong, Roshan, does as heir apparent to Sam's Tailor.”

BEST SHIRT BRAND

Paul Smith . He just knows.”

FAVOURITE SUIT

Timothy Everest, Paul Smith and Tom Ford.”

CUT OF TROUSERS

“I would love to live in a world where double-pleated bagginess was acceptable on a daily basis. Nothing off the peg truly works so Timothy Everest now makes me a modern take on my 1920's ideal.”

JEANS BRAND

Levi's Vintage Clothing 512 bootcut. Jeans should feel like pajamas and be bomb-proof.”

UNDERWEAR CHOICE

Sunspel .”

PREFERRED JACKET STYLE

“Anything that is tough. My jackets take a beating. I have two Gucci biker jackets that have been through hell and high water. They deserve to be put to rest, but they just won't die.”

note

SHOE MAKER

“Prada have always served me well, although recently Paul Smith 's latest line of trainers are rarely off my feet. But my favourite ever is a pair of black shoes by Dior when Hedi Slimane was beginning his reign. I have loved them.”

note

FAVOURITE GROOMING PRODUCT

“Whatever moisturiser my wife buys me, or Rapha gives me.”

DREAM CAR

“A Maserati Ghibli II 2.8 GT. Although I know a man who dreams of creating a Ferrari chimera: the engine and chassis of a 550 Maranello but with the body of a classic like a Ferrari 250 Testarossa. I find that inspiring, especially as he already owns an F430 Scuderia and has the means and knowledge to pull it off. I will not rest until I have convinced him it is the right thing to do.”

note

WATCH BRAND

“I stopped wearing watches a couple of years ago although I do have a dress watch. That's the only time I wear a watch as it is the only time I don't have a phone to tell me the time.”

BEST BOOK

Racing Through the Dark. Because I wrote it and I still can't believe I did that. I have read most genres and many writers, but I couldn't possibly choose one work above the others.”

note

FAVOURITE ALBUM

“Paul's Boutique, Beastie Boys. Why not?”
