Mr O'Leary's Recommendations

FAVOURITE RESTAURANT AND DISH

“Tough… I'm obsessed with Italian and seafood, so all the classics such as Scott's and J. Sheekey. Right now I'd have to go with the vongole at Bentley's. Richard Corrigan is a great man. I also love what Meat Liquor, Bocca Di Lupo and Pitt Cue are doing, and there's a spit and sawdust Turkish in Highbury that I can't pass by called Yildiz. It looks like nothing, but trust me it's phenomenal. I'm also loving Odette's, and I've never had a bad meal in Roka. In short, how long have you got?”

BEST BAR

“I'm quite old school when it comes to bars and pubs. I love the The Toucan, The Dog & Duck and The French House in London. Closer to home I adored The Engineer and was heartbroken when it changed hands. Even though the staff are really nice in there it's not the same, and I'm not a huge chain fan, so when I can, I drink in The Lansdowne. They have Truman's in there which is a really nice pint. Bar wise, it's Hix.”

note

VACATION CHOICE

“I spend a lot of time in Puglia, specifically Salento. It's a beautiful, real Italian, area. The food is out of this world and the people are great – their approach to life has a wonderful balance. Other than that I adore France, and try to get away diving and surfing as often as I can.”

note

TOP CITY

“I've lived in London half my life so I'm biased, but New York and Paris are up there too. They are so big and metropolitan they kind of transcend the countries they are in, so it's hard to compare them to anywhere else. Outside the Big Three, I have soft spots for Cape Town, Barcelona, Biarritz, Bilbao, and I've learnt to love Los Angeles, but that takes effort… and a driver's licence.”

FAVOURITE HOTEL

“This is too hard. I love The Bowery Hotel in New York because it's real and effortless. Elsewhere, I love a hotel with history, and class. Claridge's and The Savoy sum up all that's great about London hotels. Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles for me epitomizes the history and old-school glamour of the city.”

note

TYPE OF BAG

“I have an Anya Hindmarch Dylan which looks small, but it's like a Tardis. Other than that I've got an Acne Studios and Mulberry bag that I'm really enjoying.”

FAVOURED BRAND

“I can't stress this enough, but you can never go wrong with a mix and match of essential items from the following: A.P.C. , Acne Studios , Paul Smith (the smarter casual end), Burberry Accessories , Oliver Spencer , John Smedley , Orlebar Brown and Maison Martin Margiela . I like jackets from Gucci , shoes from Prada or Car Shoe , jeans from Uniqlo and chinos from Topman. I get pants and any "sweat" items from American Apparel.”

ESSENTIAL WARDROBE ITEM

“I'm addicted to a pair of navy Acne Studios trousers at the moment. They go really well with a crisp white shirt. I also have a Moncler sweatshirt that I adore.”

MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN

“I'm a fan of the timeless beauty when Hollywood wasn't all about celebrity, so Claudia Cardinale, Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn, Ali MacGraw.”

note

STYLE ICON

“I always think it's important to be influenced by history rather than to just copy it. Paul Newman, Cary Grant, Richard Harris, Gregory Peck and McQueen all had it.”

note

STYLE TIP

“Don't over complicate. Guys always look best when they feel confident in themselves. Make one item of clothing the outfit, and the rest can work around it. And buy clothes that fit and suit your body.”

TAILOR

“I usually just use my local dry cleaners for the small stuff, and my tailors for the big stuff. Thom Sweeney are my main boys.”

BEST SHIRT BRAND

“ Spencer Hart does a nice smart shirt, with a nod to an Italian look. Emmett does a more British thing that I love too.”

FAVOURITE SUIT

“How long have we got? Spencer Hart never lets me down and when I want a DB it's all about Rake. Thom Sweeney's suits fit like a glove.”

CUT OF TROUSERS

Acne Studios is knocking it out of the park at the moment.”

JEANS BRAND

“Uniqlo, skinny fit, tapered.”

UNDERWEAR CHOICE

“American Apparel, but I'm also getting into Sunspel , for T-shirts, too.”

PREFERRED JACKET STYLE

“During summer it's a Baracuta Harrington, but the Burberry Accessories and Gucci trench are never far away.”

SHOE MAKER

“J.M. Weston. It is just so refined and the shoes make you feel like a king. Also Mr. Hare is really daring.”

note

FAVOURITE GROOMING PRODUCT

“At the moment: Clinique serum. It is so much better than a moisturiser, especially in your late thirties.”

DREAM CAR

“A Mercedes Gullwing, or a 1950s 190SL. I also love a Pagoda.”

WATCH BRAND

“IWC for the beauty and simplicity for evening, and a Heuer Monaco for the day.”

BEST BOOK

“The last great book I read was City of Thieves by David Benioff. It's a beautiful story of friendship in WWII Leningrad, but ask me in 30 minutes and I'll give you another answer.”

note

FAVOURITE ALBUM

“I've always been a massive Springsteen fan, so I'd say Born to Run. I also like The Pogues, Rum Sodomy and the Lash.”
