Mr Muhlenberg's Recommendations

BEST BAR

&Union on Bree Street. It's situated in the basement of a church. My friends own it, so that's nice, and their long maturation process gives the unpasteurised, unfiltered beers a distinctive taste that sounds a death knell to the bright, bland, mass-market lagers that are served everywhere else.”

VACATION CHOICE

“Gonubie. It's where I grew up and my family still lives there. It's this little backwoods holiday town where nothing ever happens, nobody ever goes and is the perfect place to unwind. Good surfing, too.”

TOP CITY

“I've been fortunate enough to travel around the world and even though Berlin and Madagascar's northern islands have a special place in my heart, neither compares to Cape Town's natural beauty, diversity and laid-back energy.”

note

FAVOURITE HOTEL

DO & CO in Vienna. Why? The futuristic interior seamlessly blends into the classic elements and there's so much happening right outside. The bar is really nice, too”

note

TYPE OF BAG

“I use a Samsonite Pro-DLX 3 that has been designed to be check-in friendly. It means I don't need to take my laptop out when going through the X-ray screening at airports. But even when I'm not travelling, the padded pouch protects my laptop and the other compartment is the perfect size to store magazines.”

note

FAVOURED BRAND

“Adidas Originals. They're crazy, sometimes a little too crazy (paws and a tail sewn onto an animal-print hoodie), but when collaborating with designers such as Jeremy Scott and Kazuki, they get it very right.”

ESSENTIAL WARDROBE ITEM

“A stack of plain white T-shirts. These have the ability to make you feel so fresh and clean when you pull them on. Also, they're cheap as chips, very versatile and if you roll up your cigarettes in the sleeve the look is very James Dean.”

note

MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN

“My wife. She's got that whole inner beauty thing that only the truly beautiful possess.”

note

STYLE ICON

“Kurt Cobain, for making anti-style a style, doing whatever he wanted to do and always leading, never following.”

note

STYLE TIP

“If you find something that you absolutely love, buy umpteen versions of it so that you can keep wearing it forever.”

BEST SHIRT BRAND

“Bluecollarwhitecollar. The owner Paul van der Spuy has been in fashion since before his hair was white. He understands fit, the importance of wearing something that nobody else has, and is the type of guy who'll talk to you for hours about his latest custom car project instead of the obvious fashion stuff.”

FAVOURITE SUIT

“My favourite suit happens to be a wetsuit. This makes sense when you surf in Cape Town where the water temperature averages 10°C. Sure I have a ‘suit’ suit that I wear to weddings and funerals, but it pales in comparison to my Xcel Infiniti. Unfortunately I don’t get to wear it as much as I would like to, but when I do I feel like a superhero. Which is the feeling you should get whenever you pull on a suit.”

note

CUT OF TROUSERS

“I have these trousers that have a slightly baggy crotch and a carrot-fit leg. They're great. I recently bought a pair in plum.”

JEANS BRAND

“My first name-brand jeans were Levi's. I have had a few big name brands since then, which would impress my 17-year-old self, but I still go for Levi's today because they're as comfortable as an old friend. Levi's Vintage Clothing 501s. Easy.”

note

UNDERWEAR CHOICE

“Brand isn't important. Style is. Y-fronts.”

PREFERRED JACKET STYLE

“Leather. Fitted. Cropped. Worn in. The less fanfare the better.”

SHOE MAKER

“Veldskoens, or what you guys would call a desert boot. They're very versatile, can take a beating and are proudly South African.”

FAVOURITE GROOMING PRODUCT

“Fragrances. I don't primp and preen too much, but I do believe in the power of scent. Tom Ford, Comme des Garçons and Marc by Marc Jacobs are all on the top shelf.”

DREAM CAR

“Not a car but a custom motorcycle from the gentlemen at Deus.”

note

WATCH BRAND

“A gold Casio calculator watch.”

note

ESSENTIAL GADGET

“I love old things. Vintage, classics, second-hand… but when it comes to tech you should only have the best. Red Bull recently collaborated with HTC to come up with an Android phone that is the heat.”

BEST BOOK

“As much as I love discovering a new author I always go back to Anthony Burgess’ A Clockwork Orange . I must’ve read this book a hundred times. It’s the kind of book that you can open up anywhere and jump right in. It really is special.”

note

FAVOURITE ALBUM

“Beck's Odelay . Have a listen and you'll understand.”
