Mr Cowan's Recommendations

FAVOURITE RESTAURANT AND DISH

Joe Allen in Covent Garden, London. Cheeseburger. Ask for anything else and you're in the wrong place.”

BEST BAR

The Griffin in Shoreditch was a favourite when I lived there. On a good night it's full of good people. Good company makes for a good bar. Did I mention it's good?”

VACATION CHOICE

“If I had more free time I would spend it with my dad in Colombia. He moved with his Colombian wife to Bogotá when I was 16 and I haven't made it out there yet. It sounds like the kind of place where you could have an adventure or two.”

FAVOURITE HOTEL

“I like The Bowery Hotel when we play in New York. Stylistically it understands (my ideals of) New York perfectly. Alluring, moody and pulsing with energy.”

note

TYPE OF BAG

“Backpack. Anything with lots of compartments!”

FAVOURED BRAND

“I stumbled across a brand based in Melbourne called Honor Among Thieves, very classic shirts and jeans with a rockabilly twist. I love when designers use the 1950s aesthetic as a starting point then make it their own. I also love Levi's Vintage Clothing as a brand, it has a real sense of identity which I guess comes from the James Dean era. There is something about that ideal they have maintained - still outfitters to the juvenile.”

ESSENTIAL WARDROBE ITEM

“My 1950s black gabardine jacket, I would never tour without it. Looks cool and you can wear it with anything.”

note

MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN

“I have a thing for Alexis Bledel.”

STYLE ICON

“Elvis Presley – very loud but perfectly executed. Even when he was growing up in relative poverty he sourced amazing clothes. It's hard for us to imagine what he would have looked like to a 1950s America seeing him for the first time. The future had arrived.”

note

STYLE TIP

“Think about the colours you are putting together.”

TAILOR

“Nanna Sandom at Splendid Stitches in north London does all the alterations on anything vintage that fits badly. She always gets it right.”

note

BEST SHIRT BRAND

“Depends on what you want. DL Cerney in New York makes great gabardine rock'n'roll shirts but you have to go to his shop, nothing online to speak of which is a pain if you don't live in central Manhattan! I'm throwing the gauntlet to you MR PORTER.”

FAVOURITE SUIT

“I can't pronounce his name - a chain smoking Greek fella who works in north London makes trousers if I've needed them. You don't need to spend money if you know where to go. If I was a big suit wearer I'd get something done by my friend Mark at Boland & Banks, he's a young guy with passion and ideas. Sometimes you need someone to work with you, not a yes man.”

CUT OF TROUSERS

“Jeans – Acne does a good pair.”

note

UNDERWEAR CHOICE

“Clean underwear and socks regularly go missing on the tour bus so I would say anything I wouldn't form any emotional attachments to.”

PREFERRED JACKET STYLE

“Short-cut denims or leather. Levi's or vintage. Something casual that fits great – most of the time it's better to underdress well.”

SHOE MAKER

“The George Cox Strummer shoes designed for Joe Strummer of the Clash. They were the only shoes you would see him in. I love anything with a bit of history.”

note

FAVOURITE GROOMING PRODUCT

“Toothpaste is a favourite.”

note

DREAM CAR

“I'd buy a Triumph motorbike if I wasn't so sure I'd be under a bus on the way home from the dealership.”

ESSENTIAL GADGET

“My MacBook. I use it for everything. In fact I'm using it now... amazing.”

BEST BOOK

The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. It's a great story of devotion to destiny and the nature of true love. Taught me some important lessons about what to value.”

FAVOURITE ALBUM

“Is This It - The Strokes. This band made great guitar music important again, I bought this album when I was 12 and It started me on a path. You could say it was life changing.”
