FAVOURITE RESTAURANT AND DISH
“I have two in Los Angeles. Iroha on Ventura Boulevard has been a favourite for 20 years and its miso black cod is superb. Also, along the Japanese theme, Asanebo on Ventura holds a Michelin star and provides a wonderful menu/service and fascinating clientele. The daily specials are always surprising and delicious.”
BEST BAR
“Soho House in West Hollywood is a safe haven, a beautiful locale and seems to have just the right buzz no matter your mood. The Laurel Tavern in Studio City has great beer/food/atmosphere... a good mix of English pub meets NY bar. Bar Marmont at the Chateau Marmont is a good scene if you're in the mood for fun and people watching.”
VACATION CHOICE
“The Holy Island in Northumberland for the sunsets and because the tide covers the causeway twice daily giving one a sense of isolation. Also, Shelter Island in NY, for the sailing, eating and great company.”
TOP CITY
“New York for the energy and the diversity encountered from block to block. Paris for the architectural beauty and because even after all these years, I still feel like a foreigner on an adventure when there.”
FAVOURITE HOTEL
“Claridge's in London holds many happy memories and would be the perfect place to be writer in residence. Also, the Santa Caterina in Amalfi, especially the honeymoon suite, separate from the main building. The glass wall overlooking the Mediterranean is a window to a perfect view.”
TYPE OF BAG
“An old army issue backpack. Good for a motorbike, bicycle, train, plane or car.”
FAVOURED BRAND
“ James Perse for the perfect tee. Yves Saint Laurent for the cut and feel of the suit. And I'm in perpetual pursuit of the perfect white shirt, please suggest?”
ESSENTIAL WARDROBE ITEM
“My Ralph Lauren vintage motorcycle boots, a great pair of old Levi's Vintage Clothing jeans and a leather belt that I picked up somewhere along the road. Why? Because the boots make me feel grounded, the jeans are classic and simple, and the belt is right on.”
MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN
“My daughter, Marley Lia Moira Pearson.”
STYLE ICON
“Cary Grant: never ruffled, always chic. Sir Sean in Dr No. Steve McQueen riding his Triumph in the desert. Cool, elegant, timeless.”
STYLE TIP
“Never try too hard.”
TAILOR
“I've only once had a suit made bespoke - Kilgour, Savile Row. It's a beauty; I still wear it.”
BEST SHIRT BRAND
“ Gucci 's shirts have always fitted me perfectly. The cotton is superb and when correctly laundered last a lifetime.”
CUT OF TROUSERS
“I have an old pair of Gucci trousers - flat-fronted, slim cut, grey. A perfect cut, never bettered.”
PREFERRED JACKET STYLE
“Old Belstaff leather on the bike - it gets better with age. Or a Yohji Yamamoto heavy knit cardigan - a little "Starsky", but coveted by everyone whenever I wear it.”
SHOE MAKER
“Ralph Lauren vintage bike boots, plus John Lobb tan brogues. I'll pass them down to my sons who may pass them down to theirs.”
FAVOURITE GROOMING PRODUCT
“American Crew Hair Fiber. Simple, efficient, done.”
DREAM CAR
“It would have to be 'cars'. The '55 Bentley Continental in navy blue. So chic and masculine. Also, my pal, Harry Gesner has a '57 silver 190 SL Merc'. He's had it from new and has converted it from petrol to diesel to batteries. It goes like the clappers.”
WATCH BRAND
“Black-faced Marine issue Timex. Wouldn't mind a Jaeger leCoultre though.”
ESSENTIAL GADGET
“Leica M6 camera and now the Leica D-Lux 5.”
BEST BOOK
“The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov. It never ceases to engage, stimulate and surprise. Imaginatively eloquent and forward thinking.”
FAVOURITE ALBUM
“David Bowie - Hunky Dory. I discovered Bowie when I was about 13, and this album in particular is timeless. The lyrics are still inspiring.”
