Biography

Mr Chernow began his professional restaurant career in 1993 as a bus boy on the Upper East Side in New York City. He was 13 years old. After moving to LA to work at Woo Lae Oak’s original location, he returned to New York to open Punch & Judy – a wine bar on Clinton Street. Mr Chernow's Recommendations

FAVOURITE RESTAURANT AND DISH

“My favourite restaurant on earth is in Barcelona, a place called Cal Pep. The baby squid with garbonzos and squid ink is amazing. But if we are talking New York, I would have to say Frank on 2nd Avenue. Eat the "Rigatoni al Ragu" an epic dish!”

BEST BAR

“Although I no longer partake in the drinking part, I would have to say Maison Premiere in Williamsburg is my favorite. The best cocktails in New York City, an amazing atmosphere, and a top-notch raw bar.”

VACATION CHOICE

“Well, if vacationing was a regular element in my life I would probably have a more educated answer for you. That said, I am a huge fan of Spain – Barcelona specifically. The food, culture, energy, architecture, art and people make that city one of the best places to visit.”

FAVOURITE HOTEL

“I truly enjoy staying at Soho House New York. The service, aesthetic, amenities, locations and overall experience supersedes most hotels I've stayed with in my short 32 years on this planet.”

note

TYPE OF BAG

“I travel through the city on bicycle. I carry a big bag, typically a backpack by Chrome, though I wish I didn't have to. I go to the gym almost every day so apart from my computer and Moleskine, I also have sneakers, boxing gloves and gym clothes. I have not been able to find a "big kid" fancy bag that works when riding around. If I am not going to the gym, I carry a great-looking Filson bag.”

FAVOURED BRAND

“I am a huge fan of J.Crew , and have been for a while. All bases are covered with the J.Crew brand: super relaxed, casual, business casual, formal, whatever you need you can find. I believe Mickey Drexler is a true genius; what he did with the brand is beyond amazing, I aspire to be that great! I have also recently discovered Our Legacy – awesome fits, amazing quality, perfect mesh of style.”

ESSENTIAL WARDROBE ITEM

“I would have to say my boot collection. You can make anything look good with a great pair of boots… I have many.”

note

MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN

“Donna Hemmingsen Chernow, my wife… She is beautiful.”

STYLE ICON

“Steve McQueen and James Dean have been style icons to me for years. Those guys just did it right, made a T-shirt and jeans look better then Angelina and Brad Pitt.”

note

STYLE TIP

“Keep it simple, though simple is not as easy as it might seem. I am a T-shirt and jeans guy, but love to layer with a sweater and jacket if weather permits. You can always spice things up with a nice watch, ring or necklace.”

note

TAILOR

“My tailor is in the Stanton Tailor Shop in the Lower East Side. Amazing gents, they have been in the neighborhood for more than 20 years.”

BEST SHIRT BRAND

“I have got to say J.Crew for button-ups; the slim-fit cut fits me best. I can go into J.Crew and find exactly what I am looking for, they always have a large variety of colours. For T-shirts I would say James Perse and John Varvatos – very comfortable and great quality.”

FAVOURITE SUIT

“I own three Ludlow suits from J.Crew , and I also own a Theory suit that fits very well. I am not a big spender in the suit market but I like simple suits that are slim fitting.”

CUT OF TROUSERS

“Wow, I feel like I am a J.Crew advocate here, but their Bowery slim-fit trousers fit me best.”

JEANS BRAND

“I wear Acne Studios , A.P.C. , J.Crew , John Varvatos and Levi's . I love them all equally. All slim fit.”

UNDERWEAR CHOICE

Calvin Klein Underwear briefs.”

PREFERRED JACKET STYLE

“I have many jackets, and actually collect them, so this is a tough question. I have a few great leather jackets, and John Varvatos was my most recent purchase. For everyday use I switch between a Woolrich Woolen Mills jacket and a Carhartt three-quarter length. I also love H.W. Carter And Sons' stuff.”

SHOE MAKER

“In winter I wear work boots, Red Wing Irish Setters or Wolverine Engineer boots. In summer I wear Vans all day.”

FAVOURITE GROOMING PRODUCT

“I use Baxter of California hair products; they have great variety and work best with my hair.”

DREAM CAR

“The new electric Land Rover Defender (which hasn't gone into production yet)… F**king righteous.”

WATCH BRAND

“Victorinox. I'm shooting for that gold GMT Rolex, but that's a few more restaurants away...”

note

ESSENTIAL GADGET

“iShuffle… The best work-out music tool ever made.”

BEST BOOK

“Come on, that is too hard a question. I love Rule of the Bone. The E-Myth Revisited was also inspirational for me. The Catcher in the Rye is a book I will always read over and over.”

note

FAVOURITE ALBUM

“This is not going to be easy. I guess I would have to say Legend by Bob Marley, good for any occasion and mood - a nostalgic, brilliant album.”
