Mr Tobias's Recommendations

FAVOURITE RESTAURANT AND DISH

Sean's Panaroma on Bondi Beach, Sydney. Sean cooks seasonally so the menu is always changing, but the quality of the produce is fantastic. The best part is the fact it’s perfect for any occasion. Restaurant Kronenhalle in Zurich. Very old-school. Sit in the brasserie, surrounded by paintings by Braque, Chagall, Mirò and Picasso, and order the Zürcher Geschnetzeltes with Rosti. A small first portion, served from a copper pan, is followed by a second helping, still piping hot.”

BEST BAR

The Island. It’s a floating bar on Sydney harbour – one of my favorite places to be in the world. It moves around every couple of days, according to the prevailing winds and weather, and you get there by yacht or water taxi. There’s nothing like it I’ve ever come across.”

VACATION CHOICE

“Summer – Tilba on the South Coast of Australia where we have a beach house. Life simplified. Winter – Skiing. If I’m with my family: Arosa, Switzerland. If I’m looking for trouble: Jackson Hole, Wyoming. For practice in between: Perisher Valley, Australia. Next on my list is Japan. Highlight so far: there have been some serious skiing moments, however nothing beats skiing top to bottom in Arosa with my 3 year old son Samson this year.”

TOP CITY

“As a place to live, Sydney of course! No other city can compare in terms of the lifestyle I’m looking for. We live in a most beautiful landscape; I can swim at Bondi Beach before going to the office, then sail in a twilight race right after work. The food is fantastic, and culturally it is growing fast.”

FAVOURITE HOTEL

St. Regis New York: beautiful, traditional, incredible service and most of all the beds. I’ve never had a great experience in a contemporary hotel so far. Arosa Kulm, Switzerland: it’s a traditional Swiss family hotel which has taken care of generations of guests. My wife and I were engaged there, took our first son there, and recently, our second. Wolwedans, Namibia – the most special awakening I’ve ever experienced, under canvas, surrounded by the desert, it was almost other worldy.”

TYPE OF BAG

“A black Hermès Attaché.”

note

FAVOURED BRAND

“I’m not into total-look, so no one brand gets my undivided attention.”

ESSENTIAL WARDROBE ITEM

Persol Steve McQueen Folding Sunglasses – these are a classic and most essential because they’re good for all occasions. A timeless shape, incredible lenses, unquestionably handmade, and the fact they fold adds the twist. I bought them in Sardinia about 4 years ago and because of their quality they have aged beautifully - not a usual trait of sunglasses.”

note

MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN

“My wife and thriller writer – Miranda Darling.”

Windsor has been the surname of the Royal Family since 1917

STYLE ICON

“For formality, The Duke of Windsor – always impeccably dressed, always classic, always with an individual twist. For casual wear - Jean Cocteau and Paul Newman – effortless, earthy and cool.”

note

STYLE TIP

“There is only one rule to good style - never try to look like someone else. Sure, be inspired by other people, places and things, but style comes from within. It is intuitive so go with your gut feel.”

TAILOR

P. Johnson – Paddington, Sydney.”

BEST SHIRT BRAND

P. Johnson because Mr. Johnson works with his clients to get them exactly what they want. Although trained traditionally on Saville Row, he brings a wonderful youthful edge to tailoring.”

“Tuxedo pants by Lanvin . Impeccable for the evening.”

note

PREFERRED JACKET STYLE

“A vintage Helmut Lang woollen pea coat.”

SHOE MAKER

“Louis Vuitton, made-to-order Rialto Richelieu in mocha grained calf leather, with a Norwegian outsole and antique gold accessories. After the three-month wait, when they finally arrived, it was like slipping my feet into air.”

note

FAVOURITE GROOMING PRODUCT

“Skin & Tonic – Facial Refining Scrub. I use it as a daily cleanser at the beginning of each day. My skin feels new every time. Especially important when not shaving.”

DREAM CAR

“An RS version of an Audi A1 = RS1. It doesn’t exist yet but the question asked for a dream car!”

WATCH BRAND

“Panerai.”

ESSENTIAL GADGET

“A Leatherman Military black multi-tool.”

note

BEST BOOK

“Silk – Allessandro Baricco. Beautiful aesthetics, sublime. A book that, although not fast moving, is utterly absorbing.”

FAVOURITE ALBUM

“My musical taste is broad, from Verdi’s Il Trovatore to the best of Biggie Smalls, to Paul Simon’s Concert in the Park to Rage Against the Machine’s iconic self-titled album, or the very excellent 1964 recording Stan Getz & Bill Evans. All depends on the moment.”
