Mr Vinson's Recommendations

FAVOURITE RESTAURANT AND DISH

St. John Bread & Wine, it's great for entertaining visitors to London, and Da Giordano Ristorante il Bolognese in Milan. We always get a selection of the smaller dishes to share at St John and in Milan it's a pasta of the day and then lamb chops, spinach and puree potato. No menu required.”

BEST BAR

“I am not a cocktail drinker but I am happiest in a hotel bar like the The Connaught Bar in London.”

note

VACATION CHOICE

“At home in the hills outside Florence with my partner, Alvaro, our dogs and some house guests. The pool, the olive trees and provisions from the central market are a great combination.”

TOP CITY

“Tokyo, a feast for the senses. It ticks all the boxes - great hotels, buildings, food, products and they do everything so well.”

FAVOURITE HOTEL

“Park Hyatt for work or play in the city - Park Hyatt Tokyo, Park Hyatt Seoul, Park Hyatt Shanghai, Park Hyatt Beijing or Park Hyatt Milan are all flawless. Our new splurge is Aman resorts, with Amangiri in Utah and Amanpulo in the Philippines.”

note

TYPE OF BAG

“A Victoria bag from Hermès or a Prada nylon backpack if I am on my Brompton bike.”

FAVOURED BRAND

“Hermès or Jil Sander for tailoring, Tomas Maier for cashmere sweaters; Church's or Pierre Hardy for shoes; Aspesi for nylon jackets.”

note

ESSENTIAL WARDROBE ITEM

“Cashmere sweaters and an alligator belt. I can never have enough of either in a new shade.”

note

MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN

“Anyone who avoids the fillers and jabs and ages naturally.”

note

STYLE ICON

“I kind of like Giorgio Armani with his navy blue ensemble of tee with blazer but I think Pierre Hardy looks the best.”

note

STYLE TIP

“I found what works for me and I always buy versions of the same thing. Almost everything goes with everything else this way and packing, which I do almost weekly, is simple.”

note

TAILOR

“I seem to find everything fits, all I do is get my trouser hems done as I like them short. Otherwise I would recommend Alberti cleaners in Milan, just by the Castello. Take your cleaner out there to learn how to press.”

BEST SHIRT BRAND

Charvet for made to measure. For fashion, it's the Japanese, such as Junya Watanabe or Visvim.””

note

FAVOURITE SUIT

“Hermès, in navy blue. My current favourite is blue-black winter seersucker.”

note

CUT OF TROUSERS

“Right now, if it's not a jean, I think Dries Van Noten's drop crotch cotton is brilliant.”

JEANS BRAND

“Dark, slim verging on skinny, from Acne . I buy in multiples.”

note

UNDERWEAR CHOICE

“Flat front, two button cotton poplin boxers. I order by the dozen from Brescia by Roberto Ricetti.”

note

PREFERRED JACKET STYLE

“Two button blazer, navy blue, no shoulder from Jil Sander . I have it in many fabrics but the unlined double faced wool is the best.”

note

SHOE MAKER

“In spring/summer and autumn I live in Church's Pembury loafers, no socks. In winter it's their Goodward boot.”

FAVOURITE GROOMING PRODUCT

“Anything from Aesop. I just love the smell.”

DREAM CAR

“The Porsche Targa, but with an A÷ energy rating rather than the shameful G or whatever it is now. Or the new limited-edition copper Brompton bike by Tom Dixon.”

note

WATCH BRAND

“Hermés Cape Cod in barena leather.”

ESSENTIAL GADGET

“Our Sonos multi-room music system, all seamlessly built in and hidden from view thanks to wifi. With the iPhone and iPad (both of which I also could not do with out) I can control the music and web-based radio in the whole house.”

BEST BOOK

“Anything by Gore Vidal.”

FAVOURITE ALBUM

“Right now, Nina Simone compilation and 'Olympia' by Bryan Ferry.”
