Mr Halloway's Recommendations

FAVOURITE RESTAURANT AND DISH

“It's been said on Style Council before, but the service in London's Le Gavroche is impeccable. And Michel Roux Jr's Soufflé Suissesse is simply sensational.”

BEST BAR

“I'm not a big drinker, but do enjoy a bar with a view. On these merits, the rooftop terrace at St. Regis Firenze; and a glass of claret and cola (yes, really) at the 65th floor China Bar of Park Hyatt Beijing both offer wonderfully panoramic views of two completely different cities.”

VACATION CHOICE

“Everglades City, Florida, is a beautiful place, especially early in the year before the mosquitoes hatch. Rustic, rural, with friendly traditional hospitality, and home to stunning mangrove forests.”

TOP CITY

“As a Brit, I'm always slightly giddy at the thought of another visit to San Francisco or New York; but London is on the doorstep and for me, it is familiar, it is epic, it is exciting and it is therefore my favourite.”

FAVOURITE HOTEL

Park House Hotel, Bepton, West Sussex is a hidden gem. It's luxurious, has a relaxed, informal atmosphere with an excellent, friendly team.”

note

TYPE OF BAG

“I use a discreet black ballistic nylon tote bag with a lovely bitter chocolate-coloured interior, which I bought from the Accessories Boutique at work.”

FAVOURED BRAND

“I'm a big fan of Nick Hart. I've worked with him on a collaboration with AMG, and admire his sense of style, his sense of humour, and what his company, Spencer Hart , is aiming to achieve.”

ESSENTIAL WARDROBE ITEM

“Over the winter I've rarely been out of my Barbour Colomer waxed jacket. I like it as it works perfectly in the country where I live, but also in town. It's warm and watertight but not at all bulky.”

note

MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN

“It sounds soppy, but my gorgeous wife, Nicola, has the power to illuminate any room with her broad, beaming smile.”

STYLE ICON

“Motor racing legend Sir Stirling Moss always makes an effort to look smart, and he has impeccable manners. Whilst in his pomp in the 1950s and 1960s, Stirling looked very cool. And I wish I had the chops to wear a red silk suit with as much suavity as Tinie Tempah.”

note

STYLE TIP

“Anyone with politeness and good manners tends to leave more of a lasting positive impression than a well-dressed rude person. I believe one should always look the other person in the eye and smile sincerely when shaking their hand.”

note

TAILOR

“Tailored suits aside, my local dry cleaners are adept at maximising the length of all my trousers – I've a 36" inside leg measurement.”

BEST SHIRT BRAND

“My favourite is the sky blue two-button cuff shirt I wore for my wedding, by RAKE London.”

FAVOURITE SUIT

“ Spencer Hart . My midnight blue shawl collar dinner suit makes me feel like a movie star without the inconvenience of actually looking like one!”

CUT OF TROUSERS

“Slim-fit bottle green corduroy trousers, by Paul Smith .”

JEANS BRAND

“I buy Paul Smith Jeans – slim-fit, tapered leg.”

UNDERWEAR CHOICE

Calvin Klein Underwear trunks. Classic pants.”

note

PREFERRED JACKET STYLE

“Single-breasted suits me best, and I've got a lovely navy wool jacket by Gieves & Hawkes that looks the part whether casual or smart.”

SHOE MAKER

“For work, it's black Chelsea boots by Tricker's of Northampton. For the countryside, waxed suede brogue boots by Church's . When going casual I wear Clarks Originals Desert Boots. And always Birkenstock Arizona sandals on holiday.”

FAVOURITE GROOMING PRODUCT

“I love Penhaligon's fragrances and have a lot of them – my favourite is Elixir eau de toilette. It's all so beautifully packaged, too.”

DREAM CAR

“The never-raced 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR "Uhlenhaut" Coupé, of which only two exist is my all-time favourite, but the company will never sell them. My job gives me access to a huge range of new cars, and I'm always most excited about "the next one". My company car is a grey SL 63 AMG Roadster. I'm aware that I'm very fortunate.”

note

WATCH BRAND

“Mostly IWC – after owning a few, I now use a titanium Aquatimer 2000. But I also collect the lovely quirky designs from Mr Jones Watches, based in London's Oxo Tower. Sadly, my wife steadfastly refuses to let me borrow her Uniform Wares 152 Series, though…”

note

ESSENTIAL GADGET

“Aside from the usual electronic devices, I always travel with my Alfred Dunhill AD2000 carbon fibre fountain pen (with royal blue ink); and a hardback A4 Leuchtturm1917 writing book. And I would literally be lost without my glasses – they're also carbon fibre, handmade by a Danish company called Blac. All are essential!”

BEST BOOK

Brighton Rock, by Graham Greene. My wife, an English Literature teacher, convinced me to pick it up last summer. And when I did, I couldn't put it down. Pacy, violent and gripping – I think it's the definitive gangster novel.”

note

FAVOURITE ALBUM

“I've got way more than one... Anything by The Streets or Professor Green played at huge volume for when I need invigorating; Faithless – Sunday 8pm for when I want to chill; and for all other occasions it's Queen – A Night at the Opera.”
