Mr. Fitzpatrick's Recommendations

note

FAVOURITE RESTAURANT AND DISH

“Currently it is Serge et le Phoque in Wan Chai, Hong Kong. I would recommend the spinach salad and the beef for the main.”

BEST BAR

“I like b.a.r. Executive Bar (Causeway Bay, Hong Kong) for its eccentric proprietor and top cocktails and Salon No.10 (Central, Hong Kong) for its winning mix of good people, great music and strong drinks.”

VACATION CHOICE

“I try not to re-tread. I think vacations are best spent discovering new places - the world's a big place, after all. Having said that, I would happily return to California. I also love Australia. I lived in Sydney for years and still have family and wonderful friends there.”

TOP CITY

“Despite all its flaws, it has to be my hometown Hong Kong. It's simultaneously big and small and I like that duality. Sydney would be my second favourite city.”

FAVOURITE HOTEL

“I favour small, intimate hotels with character, such as The House Hotel in Istanbul. For large hotel brands, I choose The Peninsula Hong Kong for its exceptional standards in every department.”

TYPE OF BAG

“In summer, an Hermes tote in signature orange fabric. In winter, a leather Celine tote. Not sure why I change bags to match the seasons but I do.”

note

FAVOURED BRAND

“Of all time? That would have to be Martin Margiela, who is sadly no longer designing for his eponymous label. He's the most influential designer of his generation. He did things years before others. I also like Mihara Yasuhiro, a Japanese designer with a very playful mind.”

note

ESSENTIAL WARDROBE ITEM

“Black jeans. I can wear them to work, to parties, to my sons’ PTA meetings.”

note

MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN

“Definitely my talented, sexy and stylish wife, Jacqueline, who is also an amazing mother to our two boys. And Carmen Dell’Orefice deserves a mention for being stunning longer than anyone else - she's still modelling in her eighties!”

note

STYLE ICON

“I know some pretty cool cats whose style I admire. But if I were to pinpoint two it would probably be my old chum Dominic Harding because he can walk out of a flea market looking like a million dollars. I would also pick my father-in-law, Allan Fung, a funky dresser who is brave, expressive and, most importantly, continually evolving his look - even in his sixties.”

note

STYLE TIP

“Too much perfection is boring so inject something unexpected.”

note

TAILOR

“From a rather strange couple in Causeway Bay. They always get the job done though.”

BEST SHIRT BRAND

“For made-to-measure dress shirts, I like PYE. For casual wear, I think Volklore is spot on.”

FAVOURITE SUIT

“Ring Jacket from Japan. Despite its name, it makes trousers, too.”

CUT OF TROUSERS

“Slim, flat-front with waist tags. Strictly no belt loops - I can't stand trousers with belt loops. The pair that I own which defines this style was made by Lanvin.”

note

JEANS BRAND

“Uniqlo skinny fit.”

PREFERRED JACKET STYLE

“Double-breasted for work. For cooler weather I have a Burberry trench in tan leather.”

SHOE MAKER

“Zip-up boots by Mr. Hare, because they make me feel ready for anything. For weekends, I'm stuck on these animal print Vans from the Van Doren series.”

FAVOURITE GROOMING PRODUCT

“Gatsby styling wax from Japan. It's quiff-tastic!”

DREAM CAR

“A 1938 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic and a Toyota Origin (seriously, google it).”

WATCH BRAND

“Rolex (GMT-Master II) and a vintage Omega Seamaster that my dad gave to my uncle who, in turn, gave it to me.”

note

ESSENTIAL GADGET

“A hairdryer. This pompadour doesn’t just happen by itself, you know.”

note

BEST BOOK

The Turning Point by Fritjof Capra. An amazing piece of work that was so far ahead of its time.”

note

FAVOURITE ALBUM

“Of all time? Brian Wilson presents Smile by Brian Wilson. The musical ideas and execution are just jaw-dropping and beautiful. Sign o' the Times by Prince would come a close second. Prince never topped that one, in my books. But my current favourite is Hobo Rocket by Pond. I can’t stop playing it. Crazy riffs that stay in your mind for days.”
