Mr Maidoh's Recommendations

FAVOURITE RESTAURANT AND DISH

Momo [in London] has a great selection of food inspired by North African and Mediterranean fresh dishes, and being a vegetarian I usually go for the nibbles. You can get a mix of five choices from halloumi cheese, and hummus to falafel and more for a deal. Throw in the Moroccan tea and shisha if you smoke and it’s a knockout.”

BEST BAR

Kåken, Stockholm.”

TOP CITY

“London. It’s a mix of all things great and bad, the perfect balance needed in life.”

FAVOURITE HOTEL

Soho Grand Hotel [in New York City]. Nice location, spacious and with friendly staff. You get all the benefits of being in a hotel (like 24-hour room service, dry cleaning, a Mac computer with a printer and free internet, restaurant and bar downstairs) but with a personal touch that makes you feel as if you are in your own house.”

note

TYPE OF BAG

“Tote bag by House of Garmsville. The tanned bag is very simple, functional and adds that all-important street smart twist.”

FAVOURED BRAND

“Might sound like a given, but my favourite designer has always been Sam Lambert. Either designing for our ACF brand or for others, his stylistic approach to designing mixes Savile Row tailoring and craftsmanship with a modern-day twist. Having known him for more than 15 years, I am still surprised and inspired by what he cooks up. ACF brings together a traditional and comprehensive understanding of how clothing is brought to life from the inspiration of concept-creation through cutting-edge styling and finally as bold and memorable image-making.”

ESSENTIAL WARDROBE ITEM

“My ACF COAL white shirt. A concept balancing a shirtmaker’s craft with modern functionality by means of modularity. The shirt is hand-sewn and manufactured in Sweden by Eton shirts for ACF. It has four detachable collars, which allow you to use and style it however you want. It is utilitarian and hosts every man’s sartorial day-to-day needs. In addition, it is a non-iron shirt, a good feature for a travelling man such as myself. It also has a tie loop for your tie if you always lose your tie clips like I do.”

note

MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN

“My mother.”

note

STYLE ICON

“The Duke of Windsor. He knew how to play around with proportions, sizes, shapes, and fabrications. His style was timeless as he made clothes for comfort and was extremely modern with his approach. He was very clever with his cuts, for instance, his jacket waists were abnormally high to elongate his legs as he was pretty small, which in turn meant he could carry off bold prints. He has left his trademark in men’s fashion starting from the smoking jacket, to the Windsor knot to the shirts with a Windsor collar.”

note

STYLE TIP

“Everyone is different, and style is personal, I think people need to figure out what works for them and what doesn’t, and have a personal approach.”

note

TAILOR

“I make my own alterations and get Mr Lambert involved if it’s complicated.”

BEST SHIRT BRAND

“A tie between Hardy Amies and Acne Studios .”

note

FAVOURITE SUIT

“I own a couple of vintage Armani suits that I have had for almost five years now and still cherish them. The cut, lining, fabric and details are simply classic.”

CUT OF TROUSERS

“Cropped trousers that sit just above the ankle.”

note

JEANS BRAND

“Denham, skinny fit.”

note

UNDERWEAR CHOICE

“None in particular but I have been getting into the Swedish brand The White Briefs a lot lately. Preferred style is trunk.”

note

PREFERRED JACKET STYLE

“Customised fitted vintage bomber jacket.”

note

SHOE MAKER

“We only recently started making our own ACF shoes which I love, made in England, but I bought a couple of pairs of Armando Cabral shoes some years back that I can never get enough of. Functional, light and aesthetically appealing.”

FAVOURITE GROOMING PRODUCT

“Nivea Lotion for dry skin.”

DREAM CAR

“I promised myself I would never buy a Mercedes-Benz until I saw a friend’s vintage convertible Benz from the mid-1960s. Most vintage cars are appealing to me.”

WATCH BRAND

“I am not really a watch person, but I do have a couple of vintage Axcent of Scandinavia watches.”

ESSENTIAL GADGET

“I once lost my iPhone on a business trip and was rendered paralysed for the rest of the journey.”

note

BEST BOOK

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. This book is brilliantly written and has a spiritual take. It teaches that every treasure lies in our own hearts and there is no need to search for it in the outside world. Search within yourself and you get the world.”

note

FAVOURITE ALBUM

“That’s a tough one, but I always listen to the likes of Ali Farka Touré, Wu-Tang Clan, Jimi Hendrix and of course Miles Davis – depending on mood. They can never go wrong.”
