Mr Aikens's Recommendations

FAVOURITE RESTAURANT AND DISH

“I have seen so many different restaurants and concepts all over the world, but the one thing that I have come to love more than anything is a simple approach to food. The most important aspects of a restaurant are, first, the food and, second, the atmosphere and setting. One of the most beautiful establishments that I have been to is Les Pres d'Eugenie, which is in the most stunning part of France. I had one of the most simplest and delicious things to eat here – it was a whole baked potato that had been hollowed out and turned into a potato soup container.”

BEST BAR

“I am an avid lover of a whisky sour and I often use it as a benchmark to judge how good the bar is, as it’s a classic cocktail. One of the best ones that I have had has been at The Connaught Bar, designed by David Collins.”

VACATION CHOICE

“I am fairly active and sporty so will often combine a holiday with an activity of some kind, be it on a horseback safari in Africa, skiing in Switzerland, scuba diving in the Caribbean or cycling in the south-west of France. Reason being is that I will often get fidgety feet just lying on my back in the sun and I am not particularly good at relaxing.”

TOP CITY

“One of my favourite cities has to be Paris. It is so close to London yet so different in so many ways. I like the restaurants and the quality of the outdoor markets; the museums and parks are so beautiful; and I like street cafés where you can just people watch all day long without being bothered.”

FAVOURITE HOTEL

“For luxury it has to be one of Christina Ong's hotels – the beautiful COMO Shambhala Estate in Bali. It is utterly divine and serves the best healthy food that that I have ever had in a hotel.”

TYPE OF BAG

“I have two bags: one is a Alfred Dunhill satchel and the other is an old Babington House rucksack that I use for my gym kit.”

FAVOURED BRAND

S.N.S. Herning fishermen’s jumpers, as I love thick woollen jumpers. And in the summer, Simon Spurr has some great clothes – simple yet very stylish.”

note

ESSENTIAL WARDROBE ITEM

“Jeans, as I am in them most of the time, apart from when I am in my chef’s whites at work. They have to be comfy and I either wear them with Vans or Converse .”
