Mr Laird's Recommendations

FAVOURITE RESTAURANT AND DISH

“Room service at The Beverly Hills Hotel.”

BEST BAR

“In New York, it’s hard to beat Bemelmans Bar at The Carlyle. It is a classic uptown Manhattan spot to meet for drinks. In LA, The Tower Bar seems as if it is becoming a new classic. It feels timeless and warm, which is a hard mix to find out there.”

VACATION CHOICE

“Sailing off the coast of Turkey on one of those amazing wooden gulets is pure heaven. A safari in Botswana is the perfect African adventure. And the total remoteness of Soneva Gili in the Maldives is the ultimate in private low-key luxury. Yet, as amazing as all these places are, it is at our country house in Bridgehampton where I feel the most relaxed.”

TOP CITY

“I love visiting London, and Paris is inspiring... But no place can match the energy and excitement of NYC. I have felt completely at home here from the day I moved to town.”

FAVOURITE HOTEL

“As far as hotels go, my favourite is The Beverly Hills Hotel.”

TYPE OF BAG

“I have a blue canvas duffel bag from T. Anthony that I have been carrying recently. It is big enough for all my junk, and I like that it is not some trendy designer thing. That is a pet peeve...”

note

FAVOURED BRAND

“I am always inspired by Dries Van Noten. He has such a unique vision. He does his own thing each season – and I really like how he can add some subtle nuance to even the most basic things.”

ESSENTIAL WARDROBE ITEM

“It would probably be a perfectly tailored jacket. It is the one thing you can wear almost anywhere and with anything, and feel totally comfortable yet appropriate and pulled together all at once.”

MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN

“I just had the opportunity to work with Kate Winslet on a project, and I must say she literally took my breath away. Besides being an obviously beautiful woman, she has real character. A depth and strength that is magnetic and interesting.”

STYLE ICON

“It’s a weird mix of characters for different reasons. The classic, casual ease of Steve McQueen and JFK; the nerdy cool of Woody Allen and Wes Anderson; and the individual flair of Lapo Elkann and Waris Ahluwalia. They are all inspiring in their own way.”

note

STYLE TIP

“All my shirts come back boxed and folded from the cleaners so they are easy to travel with and always look great. (That may sound obvious – but so many guys get their shirts sent back on hangers and it makes no sense!)”

note

TAILOR

“Lydia Jakubowski is a genius tailor who works with my friend, the incredible stylist Karl Templer. She is on-set during most of my shoots and she can do anything. From the perfect jean hem to expertly tailoring a full suit. She is awesome!”

BEST SHIRT BRAND

“I have a bit of an obsession with Band of Outsiders shirts. I have hundreds.”

note

FAVOURITE SUIT

“I have been ordering Prada made-to-measure suits the past few years. The styles, cut and fabrics are the perfect blend of modern and classic.”

note

CUT OF TROUSERS

“Dries always does interesting takes on classic trousers. Simple, yet with subtle detail.”

JEANS BRAND

“I have been wearing three styles recently. J.Crew 484 Slim , Acne Studios Max and RRL Slim Straight.”

UNDERWEAR CHOICE

“Plain Calvin Klein Underwear boxer briefs in heather grey. I love the idea of boxers – but they are not comfortable. So this is the next best thing I have found.”

note

PREFERRED JACKET STYLE

“Brunello Cucinelli’s single-breasted double vent jackets are sheer perfection.”

note

SHOE MAKER

“Prada’s version of the classic cordovan penny loafer is perfect. It’s that Italian take on American prep that is right up my alley. I love my Alden brogues. They stand the test of time. Trainers are either Dior Homme or classic Adidas Sambas.”

FAVOURITE GROOMING PRODUCT

“I’m a low maintenance type overall – but I do like anything by Aesop. And Clinique’s Face Scrub does the trick every so often.”

DREAM CAR

“It would have to be the Porsche 911. The lines and timeless overall design are simply beautiful to me. I’ve flirted with other car fantasies – but I always come back to the 911.”

WATCH BRAND

“Most often a Rolex Oyster with a re-issued vintage face from the 1960s. I found it at the incredible watch store Pisa on Via Verri in Milan. I’ve never seen another one like it. I also love my platinum IWC Portuguese with rose-gold numerals.”

note

ESSENTIAL GADGET

“My iPhone. Although turning it off is like a special luxury indulgence.”

BEST BOOK

“John Irving is my favourite writer. A Prayer For Owen Meany is heartbreaking, human and inspiring. And I never wanted Garp to end!”

FAVOURITE ALBUM

“went to university in the 1980s so I have a soft spot for that decade. My all-time faves are Psychedelic Furs’ Mirror Moves, Prince’s Purple Rain and REM’s Document and Out of Time.”
