Mr Tloupas's Recommendations

note

FAVOURITE RESTAURANT AND DISH

La Focacceria des Vitelloni, in Paris. For lunch in the sun, with a simple ball of mozzarella di bufala.”

note

BEST BAR

Le Nant, in the 18th arrondissement of Paris. The decor hasn't changed since the 70s, the clients neither. I'm actually planning to run it some day.”

VACATION CHOICE

“Greece, my homeland, in the summer. Still the best country on earth, plus it's the birthplace of democracy (and feta cheese). In the winter you can find me in the Alps, usually Chamonix, "working" on the ski brand I art direct, black crows.”

TOP CITY

“Volos, in Greece, for its sounds and smells. I love harbours, I love mountains, I love derelict cars and bikes. Volos has all of that and more.”

FAVOURITE HOTEL

Fresh Hotel in Athens. The design is a bit Noughties, the breakfast is nondescript, but the roof terrace with its pool and bar is a perfect escape from the squalor of downtown Athens.”

TYPE OF BAG

“For daily use I have a customised Aston Martin Racing satchel (a collaboration with Hackett), to which I added a second strap to use it as a messenger bag. It's a freebie, though, and I'm not 100% satisfied with it as I find satchels camp. For Bike Polo I use the skate messenger bag by Incase. Tough and well conceived. Also, rolling suitcases are a major faux pas.”

FAVOURED BRAND

“Ramdane Touhami, hands down. Whoever has seen his clothes will confirm. I can't wait till he relaunches his fashion line, now that he has sold his shares in Cire Trudon, after relaunching the candle brand spectacularly.”

ESSENTIAL WARDROBE ITEM

“Customised Nike sneakers, adapted for Bike Polo. I cut the soles and installed a clipless Shimano SPD pedal system in them. Truly essential to play hardcourt bike polo.”

note

MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN

“Making that choice seems to be my daily problem.”

STYLE ICON

“I don't really "respect" any style. But my friend Lapo Elkann always amazes me with his brash yet impeccable outfits.”

note

STYLE TIP

“Fly in style. I always make an effort when going to the airport. Some people look like they're at home on their couch, in tracksuits, with a neck cushion inflated around their necks. Disgraceful.”

note

TAILOR

“Paris is full of small tailors. I use my local one on rue Vauvenargues, Armand Tailleur. Son and grandson of tailors, passionate and skilled.”

BEST SHIRT BRAND

“I like my friend Alix's label, Thomsen, for the prints.”

note

FAVOURITE SUIT

“Christophe Lemaire. Plus I get to see a logo I designed on the inside of the jacket.”

CUT OF TROUSERS

“I haven't found the right trousers yet, especially since I cycle every day. But Outlier in New York has been doing some good bike-specific ones recently.”

note

JEANS BRAND

“Jeans can't survive six months of cycling. So I'm still searching.”

note

UNDERWEAR CHOICE

“Monoprix Homme. Cheap, nice, sold in a supermarket so open late for that last-minute date you didn't expect…or for the morning after.”

PREFERRED JACKET STYLE

“M65! Can't beat the US Army for tailoring. All the rip-offs or spin-offs on that cut work.”

note

SHOE MAKER

“I wear either African "sapeur" brightly coloured leather shoes, or Greek summer straw loafers, €5 from local markets.”

FAVOURITE GROOMING PRODUCT

“Hiroshi Fujiwara's retaW line is nice and simple. But my favorite grooming product is to be found on women's lips. Eight hour cream by Elizabeth Arden simply tastes the best.”

DREAM CAR

“My car, a 1981 Honda Prelude.”

WATCH BRAND

“Bell&Ross Space 3 Titanium.”

ESSENTIAL GADGET

“My bike tool bag. 15mm spanner, Allen key set, puncture repair kit.”

note

BEST BOOK

“Other People's Trades, by Primo Levi. Primo Levi was a crucial witness of the concentration camps, and wrote one of the most harrowing books about the Shoah, yet this book of short stories is highly entertaining, light-hearted and unexpected.”

note

FAVOURITE ALBUM

“I'll go for songs instead. 'Bella ciao' – an Italian WWII partisan song. 'Seul Le Crime Paie', by Lunatic, 1996 French hip hop song, a classic. 'Suspicious Minds', by Elvis Presley.”
