Watches
Your most pressing style questions answered
As I am never without my phone, what is the point of wearing a watch?
As a watch-company president once put it: 'You can't wear a Porsche on your wrist.' We wear watches to tell the world who we think we are, whether that's an action man in an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak or an aesthete with a Patek Philippe pocket watch. Jay McInerney, the American author, once noted that if you meet a man at the weekend his watch may be the only clue he gives as to his income bracket.
I would rather my colleagues didn't know how much I spent on my watch. What are the stealth choices?
The more famous the brand and model the quicker people will guess what it cost - some watchmakers' entry-level pieces have five-figure price tags. Go for a respected but less well-known manufacturer, like H Moser, and few men will judge you for it. And bear in mind that white gold, unlike yellow gold, can easily be taken for stainless steel.
It's time to replace my Timex. What watch will work with both casual and smart clothes?
Something utilitarian like a steel Rolex is never wrong. Keep it simple and classic and it should work with a suit as well as it does with shorts and a T-shirt.
I'm ready to buy my second proper watch. How do I choose?
Look for something you love that is completely different from your first watch. If you bought a sports model first time round, then consider a refined, thin watch that will only look right with a suit. That way you'll have a watch for different occasions, rather than two watches designed for exactly the same purpose.
