Inspired by the kind of slip-on shoes worn traditionally by Norwegian fishermen, Mr George Henry Bass created the first pair of penny loafers back in the 1930s. Made from smooth black leather, they have resilient hand-stitched seams and rubber-trimmed soles for traction.
