Introducing Mr P.

A new brand designed and created by MR PORTER. It’s a range of clothes that we ourselves have always wanted: stylish, yet understated; simple, but full of the small touches that matter; affordable, but made to the highest standards. The idea is to make the art of getting dressed that little bit more straightforward, as well as enjoyable. The rest, of course, is up to you.

The Proof is in the Wearing

Before we set about designing the new Mr P. collection, we posed ourselves a series of questions. What qualities do men look for in clothes? To what extent, if at all, do they wish to be defined by what they wear? We soon realised, of course, that we couldn’t fully answer these questions on our own. In order to build a brand that is consistent with the way that real men want to dress, we needed to meet a few of them first.

MR TOMO CAMPBELL

MR TOMO CAMPBELL

Artist, London

“I never have a preconceived idea of what I’m going to do. The possibility of a painting can only happen in the moment. Ideas can change depending on my mood, on the time of day, on what else is in the room.”

Mr Campbell combines a formal artistic education with an instinctive painting style to create large-scale artworks that seem to tremble with nervous energy. The corduroy suit that he models in this short film is not too different from the one he wore to his wedding.

MR JAMES HENRY

MR JAMES HENRY

Chef, Paris

“The way I like to refine my work is to see what’s necessary and slowly start to take away. You’re picking away until the point where you have almost zero artifice. I’m constantly looking at ways to simplify.”

An acclaimed chef and restaurateur, Mr Henry is currently in the process of setting up a sustainable farm-restaurant on the outskirts of Paris. He lives a fast-paced life and demands a versatile wardrobe to match.

MR MATHIAS MENTZE

MR MATHIAS MENTZE

Architect, Copenhagen

“When you look at my workspace, it’s very neutral. This is similar to the way I dress for work. I like to have a blank canvas – a surface that I can project something onto. We work with a lot of different visual languages and I don’t want them to be affected by my personal taste.”

Mr Mentze runs Studio 0405, a Copenhagen-based design and architecture agency. MR PORTER visited his atelier, a stark white space in a converted warehouse, to learn more about the demands of working between creative and corporate worlds.

MR MICHAEL SALU

MR MICHAEL SALU

Writer, Berlin

“British tailoring is the underpinning of my personal style narrative. That makes sense, because it’s where I was born. But I do like to mix it up… there are more flamboyant ideas that I think definitely come from my West African heritage.”

Mr Salu is an amalgam of a wide variety of cultural influences. Originally from London, he now works as a writer and creative director in Berlin. In a wide-ranging conversation, he explained to MR PORTER how he finds self-expression through clothes.
