A Winter Accessories Gift Guide

The hats, scarves and gloves to wrap up for your loved ones (or yourself) .

Winter is coming”, possibly the most overused adage in all of the seven kingdoms, has fooled our collective consciousness into thinking that when the weather turns colder, bad things are on the way. As such, winter’s imminent arrival is usually met with shudders rather than excitement, but at MR PORTER, we are of the opinion that it should be embraced with open arms, not least because of the sartorial pleasures that become available to us as the mercury plummets.

Coats and sweaters are an obvious place to start, but they’ll only keep you so warm; the real cosiness lies in the accessories. Toasty gloves, warm hats, and snug scarves are all reasons to look forward to freezing weather. More than that, they’re the perfect things to give as a present – there’s no worry about finding the right size, after all. So, before we all freeze to death, allow us to make a few winter accessory gift suggestions for the well-dressed gentleman in your life. If you yourself happen to be that gentleman, well then, need we say more?

While scientists have largely denounced the myth that most of our body heat gets lost through our heads, that’s no reason not to invest in a woolly hat this winter. The options are many, and an abundance of designers on MR PORTER offer everything from soft insulating beanies through to Baltic-beating trapper hats. For the former, Thom Browne is a good shout – on site now there are a number of beanies in thick cosy knits that are perfect for winter walks. For particularly blustery days, try this shearling-trimmed trapper from Oliver Spencer which will look just as appropriate on a country ramble as it will on a stroll around the city.

Though cold hands may indicate a warm heart, a man’s mitts are better off when protected from the winter elements. These shearling mittens from Hestra come with an adjustable cord around the wrist that can be tightened to seal in heat, and the brand’s founder Mr Martin Magnusson began by making gloves for lumberjacks, so you’re in safe (and warm) hands with this pair. If they seem a little hefty for daily use, consider a pair of gloves instead. Gloves, while once a winter accessory staple, have fallen out of favour over recent years as they came between us and our smartphones, (although back in 2010, the clever folks in South Korea got around this by using frozen sausages as styluses). For those of us who can’t stomach such accessories, look no further than Dents. The distinguished British glove maker has been around since the 16th century, but that doesn’t mean it can’t move with the times. Case in point: its Shaftesbury leather gloves, which also happen to be lined with cashmere, are engineered so that they can be used with touchscreens, and no telling silver fingertips in sight. How’s that for a handy innovation?

A scarf may be the most versatile thing in a man’s wardrobe. It’s the perfect detachable accessory that can be tied in myriad ways (read more on that matter in our comprehensive guide, here) and can pep up an outfit all while keeping you toasty around the neck. This striped one from Acne Studios, made from thick wool dyed in rich burgundy and a dark pine green, will add a warmth of colour to a winter outfit, while this fringed cashmere and silk-blend scarf from Loro Piana is a great choice to add a dash of Italian luxury to an outfit without being too bulky.
