Eight Statement Knits For The Transition Into Autumn

Words by Jack Stanley

1 September 2022

There’s something symbolic about the start of September. Maybe it comes from childhood memories of returning to school, or perhaps from the rapidly-approaching autumn equinox, but it always feels like the definitive end of summer. As the days get shorter, darker and colder, there is at least one benefit to the seasonal transition: the start of winter dressing. To kick off layering season, we’ve pulled together eight statement knitwear pieces that prove that colourful dressing doesn’t have to be confined to the warmer months.

01.

The deadpan Acne Studios checked wool cardigan

Acne Studios’ face logo might sum up how a lot of people feel about the end of summer, but the Katlaro cardigan is more likely to inspire a smile. The red and pink checkerboard make it a guaranteed head turner, while the mid-weight knit and slight crop guarantee comfort. To make sure the cardigan gets the attention it deserves, we recommend keeping it simple with a classic blue jeans and white sneakers combination.

The bright pink TOM FORD fine cashmere sweater

The cashmere sweater is, rightly, a wardrobe staple. TOM FORD has taken it to a new level with the use of a seven-gauge cashmere – giving the sweater a finer texture – and, most importantly, the bright pink colour. The simple design of the sweater makes it a versatile piece, while the pop of colour it guarantees will be a bright relief on darker days.

The two-tone Thom Browne mohair-blend sweater

Cable-knit sweaters are a classic and traditional piece that have been worn for as long as anyone can remember. Thom Browne reworks the cable knit through the use of its fun-mix design with half of the sweater arriving in a traditional cream Donegal wool and mohair-blend, while the other half arrives in grey. A few Thom Browne signatures – including the arm stripes and striped trims – help to elevate the humble cable knit into a statement piece.

The exclusive CELINE HOMME studded Fair Isle sweater

There isn’t much that’s very punk about a Fair Isle sweater, but that hasn’t stopped CELINE HOMME from reworking the Scottish classic in its own vision. In this harder, tougher, louder version, the sweater features a black base for its colourful stripes – in this case sections of red, green, yellow and more. But the real kicker comes towards the bottom. The CELINE logo runs around the base of the sweater, constructed using metal studs to add to the punk influence.

The botanical-dyed alpaca-blend Maison Margiela cardigan

Nothing says cosy season like a big cardigan. Maison Margiela’s comes with a relaxed fit and longer sleeves, while its blend of alpaca, cotton and wool will help keep you warm. The design also brings to mind Mr Kurt Cobain’s iconic MTV Unplugged cardigan, so try pairing it with a white tee and leather trousers to show off its rock ’n’ roll credentials.

The striped mohair-blend Marni fuzzy sweater

Marni’s striped mohair-blend is instantly recognisable nowadays, as the Italian label infuses the traditional world of knitwear with playfulness, fun and colour. This particular sweater is the perfect example, featuring a full rainbow of stripes across its fuzzy exterior. The mohair blend is guaranteed to keep you warm, and the colour palette will make it look as if the sun is always shining.

The “gimme intarsia” Alanui Rolling Stones sweater

This Alanui sweater pays tribute to one of the biggest bands of all time, complete with one of the most recognisable logos. The grey virgin wool knit is given over to the bright red lips of the Rolling Stones, immediately making a statement for the wearer. The Rolling Stones theme continues onto the reverse, where the band’s name is knitted in black, and the words “it’s only rock ’n’ roll” on the sleeve (but we like it).

The Elder Statesman multi-coloured shawl-collar cashmere cardigan

The Elder Statesman is known for using a wide range of colours, and this shawl-collar cardigan features more shades of green than you probably knew existed. As if the mismatched stripes of green weren’t enough, it’s also made from some of the world’s finest cashmere. The cardigan is heavily influenced by The Elder Statesman’s Los Angeles home, so partner it with woven shorts and Birkenstock sandals to keep that California cool.
