THE JOURNAL

Gucci’s bold statement pieces deserve a place in your wardrobe – here’s how to make them work for you.
So you’ve perused the new, exclusive collection from Gucci for MR PORTER. You’ve maybe even watched the film, set in a charmingly skewed country manor, that we’ve created to celebrate the launch. There may even be a few bits and pieces on your Wish List. Now comes the crucial question: how exactly are you going to wear them? Such is the boundary-pushing creativity of Mr Alessandro Michele’s distinct new vision for the Italian powerhouse that it’s not always immediately obvious how to sync the individual pieces neatly into your pre-existing wardrobe. (That is, if you’re not one of the many trend-conscious folk that are already dressing in head-to-toe in Gucci anyway.) But fear not, in the guide below we’ve put together three ways into the collection. Scroll down, and take your pick.
REFRESH YOUR TAILORING
Gucci is a house that’s always been revered for its sharp, slim-fitting tailoring, something that’s as true under the stewardship of Mr Michele as it was during the time of his predecessors. The difference here is in the embellishment, as evidenced by the red-and-green-trimmed lapels of the example above. Though this might seem a little bold in comparison to your regular officewear, it’s actually a variation on a rather classic archetype: the school blazer. Wear it like you would a velvet or dinner jacket, with a pair of plain midnight blue trousers, and, if you’re after a bit more fun, pair it with Gucci’s chenille-patched loafers to play up the varsity feel.
SHOW YOUR STRIPES
Yes, there’s a lot of pattern going on in this V-neck sweater, but that’s no need to fear it. In fact it’s easy to pull off such a design as long as you pair it with relatively plain pieces. It would look good with any pair of navy trousers, but we particularly like it with this velvet-trimmed pair from the same collection. The stripes down the side of the legs – a hybrid between a classic tuxedo detail and the kind of thing you might see on a vintage tracksuit – are a nice nod to the bold collar and waist trim on the sweater.
GO FOR IT
Of course, at a certain point, if you’re on board with Gucci, you’ve just got to throw a little bit of caution to the wind. Both this cube-print track top and these embroidered denim jeans seem to have been inspired by the kind of much-loved garments you would find in a thrift store, and so should be thrown together in the same insouciant spirit. Wear them together with a plain white tee – contrary to popular belief, you can have too much of a good thing.
