Street-style inspiration has been hard to come by of late. It’s cold, it’s pandemic, it’s not a particularly inspiring time. Enter: Mr Justin Bieber in Paris. Like, er, Emily before him, he has taken the city for his own, using the backdrop of fashion’s global capital to debut a new look, and prance through the streets with a lover. (Full disclosure: we have not seen Emily In Paris and we’re making a lot of assumptions about the premise of this show.)

Seriously, though, have you seen Mr Bieber’s, ahem, serious new look? Gone are the scumbro jeans and tees (well, not gone, they resurfaced days later at the airport) and there is nary a greasy lock in sight. Instead, as Mr Bieber made his way through the City of Light, he gave us a taste of what we could expect from the pop star in his late twenties (he just turned 27). And we can expect slim trousers, boxy 1990s working-woman inspired blazers and brightly hued sneakers. There’s still a good dose of cheek: he topped the whole look off with lavender sunglasses and a customary beanie. And those neck tats are still, of course, on his neck. But the whole effect definitely feels like he’s leaving some of his guileless child-star days behind him.
But the best look to come out of his trip had to be the head-to-toe blue he wore while sightseeing with his wife, Ms Hailey Bieber, dressed in head-to-toe chartreuse. Is matching your spouse cool again? Well, they’re not exactly matching, but they’re doing something very similar – and pulling it off with equal aplomb. Monotone get-ups might, in theory, seem lazy or even boring, but here the Biebers are proving that tonal dressing can actually be very eye-catching, especially when your other half dresses in the complementary hue on the colour wheel.
Wait a second, are they wearing the same blindingly white sneakers? Looks like it. Of course, the reason this whole thing works is that each look on its own is excellent, but when put together? Couple perfection. More of this please, Biebs.
