THE JOURNAL

Feel the need for beads? It’s time for a summer wrist assessment.
Not so long ago, it was only gap-year bores and yoga gurus who adorned their wrists with stacks of beads – statement-shouting signifiers of how well travelled and/or free spirited they were. But, as chief execs and the corporate drones beneath them sought adventure as an escape from the humdrum reality of office life, they came back from their grand tours of Bali and Brazil with souvenir bracelets peeking out from under their starched shirt cuffs. The luxury industry took note. These days, you’re as likely to see a decorous string of beads at a boardroom meeting as on the wrist of a Pitti peacock, and brands from Gucci to Bottega Venetta to Tod’s have made men’s jewellery a mainstay of their collections each season.
So, as your sleeves get shorter, or at the very least rolled up, there’s no time like the present to invest in some stylish wrist candy. Here are six styles to give you the upper hand in the sartorial stakes this summer.

Luis Morais Beaded Bracelet
Just because you’re dressed in formal workwear, doesn’t mean you can’t display a little personality. Where would Hermès be, for example, without its playful tie prints, which have variously featured everything from dinosaurs to squirrels? Nobody understands this more than Brazilian-born, Miami-based jeweller Mr Luis Morais, who specialises in crafting simple yet sophisticated bracelets from fine materials that’ll add a certain character to your office uniform. These silver-tone glass beads are elasticated (easy to slip on and off at the gym) and can be worn on their own, or layered with other beaded bracelets like these from Isaia.

Alexander McQueen Studded Leather Bracelet
“What did I take from punk? Just about everything,” Mr Alexander McQueen famously said, and the movement’s rebellious ethos has continued to permeate the label’s collections in the seven years since his death. His anarchic sprit lives on in the form of this studded leather bracelet, finished with a silver-skull charm: the label’s chief leitmotif. Statement pieces like this are best saved for off-duty, out-of-office outfits that are monochrome in palette: Acne Studios leather jacket, Saint Laurent ripped jeans and a pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarers. Eyeliner optional.

Miansai Hook and Cord Bracelet
The nautical look is a spring/summer perennial that never goes out of style. By that reasoning, you should get plenty of wear out of a Miansai hook and cord bracelet. The Miami-based brand has anchored this collection with marine-grade ropes, Italian leather bracelets and precious metal that are versatile enough for every occasion, from a picnic in the park to a party on a yacht. Wear this leather blue version with a red Breton striped tee from A.P.C. and tailored cotton-twill chino shorts by Parisian brand Ami for a laid-back look worthy of the Côte d’Azur.

Bottega Veneta Leather Woven Bracelet
Bottega Veneta remains a go-to for those of us who are a little hesitant when it comes to jewellery. A woven leather bracelet is a good starting point and a versatile addition to any man’s wardrobe – it whispers understated good taste, and is as appropriate for business as it is for pleasure. Wear this version in storm-blue leather with a pair of Tod’s Gomino driving shoes and an Orlebar Brown tee for a considered off-duty look, or with unstructured tailoring for something a little smarter.

Tom Ford Wrap Bracelet
Most of us go formal and conservative during the working week – admit it, your workwear is probably a spectrum of charcoal and navy. So, investing in something discreet, with just enough shine, is a good way to add some personality to everyday looks. Tom Ford’s bracelet is woven in a rich dark brown leather and has been punctuated with the label’s signature “T” fastening in polished gold. It would work well with a timepiece in a similar hue. Dress up further with elegant cufflinks from Kingsman and Italian tailoring from Brunello Cucinelli.

Le Gramme Brushed Sterling Silver Cuff
Minimalist jewellery line Le Gramme takes its name from the international unit of measure; it’s a scientific, precise inspiration that matches the brand’s vision of irreducible simplicity. This brushed sterling silver cuff will resonate with those with a fondness for minimalism, the sort of man who prefers the clean lines of Le Corbusier and COS tailoring. Pair it with other simply designed accessories like this Mondaine watch or a pair of Alice Made This cufflinks – an architectural piece such as this is best worn on its own so avoid stacking it with anything else. And remember, as a general rule, metals should match. Silver is less ostentatious and easier to pair than rose or yellow gold, since it also sits pretty alongside stainless steel and white gold.
