The Sneaker Drop: December’s Big Releases From Nike And Adidas

Words by Mr Jim Merrett

5 December 2022

Perhaps you see yourself as a potential sneaker designer with a bunch of fantastical schemes. But could you come up with anything wackier than Sacai’s latest take on one of Nike’s original running shoes? How about: crisp Air Force 1s, but with metallic Swooshes? Someone got there first (we’ll take silver). Why not a football shoe that will run on icy pitches? Huh, adidas invented it in 1949? OK, what about sneakers inspired by the work of Dr Seuss? Oh, the places they’ll go. Wait, what? They’ve already been. This is harder than it looks.

Forum Low “Grinch” by adidas Originals

Now, the Grinch, we all know, had two shoes that were too tight.

So he sought a sponsorship deal, to get them just right.

He first went to Nike, and they just did it!

They turned the Kobe 6 green! Which was good, we admit it.

We liked the Grinchy colourway as soon as we saw ’em.

But now we love the shaggy, green suede of this adidas Forum.

And we’d say this new shoe is one to keep an eye on.

Not least because of the Grinchy eye on the right tongue.

But also the graphics! The hangtags! The pins! All other good reasons.

Why these Grinch shoes will steal Christmas! The whole holiday season!

What’s more, they come in a special red box.

(And for the next Dr Seuss collab, please, Fox In Socks.)

Samba OG by adidas Originals

Now, you might not have noticed, but there’s currently a certain football tournament going on. We know, they kept it quiet. And if you have more than a passing interest in the beautiful game, then, at one time or another, you’ll have probably owned a pair of adidas Sambas. First introduced in 1949 to enable players to run on hard, icy training grounds – little chance of that in Doha, depending on the ferocity of the air conditioning – it went on to become the brand’s second-best-selling shoe after the Stan Smith. Which team’s tactical strategy will win out this year? We’ll know more once we’ve completed our Panini sticker album. As for the shoes, we love them in their purest form.

Air Force 1 Low Silver Swoosh by Nike

Nike’s “Color Of The Month” project to mark the 40th birthday of the iconic Air Force 1 takes a suitably festive turn for December with a Metallic Silver Swoosh. The brand’s original intention for the line was to roll out new models every season, as with the Air Jordan, but Mr Bruce Kilgore’s design proved impossible to better. Its simplicity is the key to its timeless appeal, but who can resist the shiny trimmings of the season? And those tonal details are more in-keeping with the branding than slapping on tinsel or a bauble.

Cortez 4.0 by Nike x Sacai

And so, back to where it all began. The first Nike shoe designed by Mr Bill Bowerman, the Cortez, celebrates its 50th birthday with a reworking by Ms Chitose Abe. Of course it’s not that simple, with Sacai’s glitch-in-the-Matrix approach to collaborations delving into Nike’s archives and pulling out several timelines at once. The signature stacked heel and “double-everything” technique return, and, as ever, you’ll have to be twice as quick as anyone else to get hold of a pair.

Which shoes do you choose?
