THE JOURNAL

A few months of rearranging (or let’s face it, cancelling) plans and adjusting to new schedules has hardly afforded us pause to think about how we’ll adapt our wardrobes to the arrival of warmer weather. But now summer’s here, we’ve realised that while everything has changed, not everything has changed. The sun is shining, and we still want our clothes to reflect that, for reasons of style but also practicality. Sweltering in sweatpants is not a good look. Here then is a checklist of the stylish stuff we’ll be donning from here on out.
01. The bucket hat
While it may retain its association with the geezertastic fashion of decades past (hello Mr Liam Gallagher), the bucket hat is much more than a throwback to the Madchester era. Classier than the baseball cap, but still eminently casual, it’s easy to wear with most laid-back summer looks. This pink canvas one from Stüssy commands just the right amount of streetwise swagger.
02. The sunglasses
Come summertime, no man should be without his signature pair of sunglasses. A worthy investment (as long as you don’t leave them on the beach), a sturdy, stylish pair such as these from California-based brand Mr Leight will see you through the sunnier months and beyond. Handcrafted in Japan from titanium and acetate, they’re anti-reflective, blue-tinted, and the timeless design is as sleek as they come.
03. The bandana
If our style senses are right, the bandana could be one of the biggest trends this summer. Possibly one of the most versatile accessories a man can own, it can be used as a face covering, to protect the back of your neck from the sun or slotted through a belt loop. Wear this one from RRL, printed with classic western iconography, and channel your inner cowboy.
04. The tote bag
Have you ever seen such a jovial-looking tote bag? Made by KAPITAL, a Japanese brand noted for its craftsmanship that has made the smiley face its signature, the bag is reinforced with leather corners, will sit comfortably on your shoulder, and is capacious enough to see you through a weekend away (or perhaps more pertinently, a trip to the greengrocers).
05. The double-threat swim shorts
While a jaunt to the beach might feel like sun-induced reverie right about now, swim shorts aren’t only for… er… swimming. A pair with a tailored fit, such as TOM FORD’s terracotta trunks, are the smart choice given that you can get away with wearing both in and out of the pool. If you opt for the latter, make a sartorial splash and team them with a Breton tee and sandals. Speaking of which…
06. The slip-on shoes
Yes, we know, it’s frightfully old-fashioned of us to continue to promote the idea that shoes make the man, but your choice of summer footwear really is very important. Even if you’re not getting out as much as you used to, a slip-on pair of slides or espadrilles will set the tone for the rest of your outfit. The leather and suede example above from our in-house label Mr P. are also exceedingly comfortable, which is always a plus is sweltering weather.
07. The tie-dye T-shirt
Summer just isn’t summer without tie-dye. At least that’s the thinking we’ve been prescribing to for the last few years. A T-shirt is the easiest way to dip your toe in the trend that has managed to capture our hearts season after season. Nicholas Daley’s version is ever-so-slightly oversized, and thus laid-back, which makes it all the more suitable for sunny season.
08. The camp-collar shirt
The beauty of a camp-collar shirt – besides the perennially-stylish mid-century vibe donning one gives off – lies in its versatility. Even a patterned iteration, such as the example from EQUIPMENT (the place to go for easy, breezy shirting) above, looks right at home with flip-flops and loose linen shorts, but can also be smartened up in a jiffy with the aid of some pleated trousers and loafers. Who said day-to-night dressing was hard?
09. The everyday chain
You’ll have been hearing a lot about “the chain” of late. Recently repopularised by Mr Paul Mescal in the BBC/Hulu adaptation of Normal People, in the original text, the humble strip of silver is a manifestation of the class chasm between his character Connell and his love Marianne. But don’t worry, in real life, a necklace just a really simple, stylish and, if we’re honest, somewhat sensual way to spruce up summer looks.
10. The pleated shorts
Though summer often brings with it an understandable urge to discard what is smart and stifling in favour of what is comfortable, a spell of warm weather is no reason to dress slovenly. These crisp, cream shorts from Brunello Cucinelli are a lesson in sophisticated yet breezy summer style, pleated and cuffed as they are, but with a sporty elasticated waistband. Just keep them away from the Aperol.
