Why The Cardigan Is Your Best Friend This Winter

Get cosy with this season’s key coverup.

There was a point in time, circa 2006-2008, where a stylish young male wouldn’t leave the house without a cardigan. You’d opt for a slim-cut, fine-knit variety, and wear it neatly buttoned up with some skinny jeans and pointy shoes (usually to go and see a band with “The” in the title). All in all, quite fun really, but yes, probably a set of habits best consigned to the past. So, how do we stand, cardigan-wise, today? Judging by this season, this knitwear classic is not only bigger and better than in its indie rock heyday, but being designed with a certain knowing nostalgia: the preponderance of shawl necks, oversized collars and kitsch prints in this autumn’s examples make them gawkily cool. Scroll down for our favourite examples from this week’s new arrivals on MR PORTER, and how to wear them.

The intricate waffle-knit texture of this wool and alpaca cardigan from Italian brand Incotex makes it feel particularly cosy against the skin, while its subtle navy and white yarns will go with almost anything. Sling it on at the weekend over a plain T-shirt, or take it into the office with a shirt and some crisp chinos from A.P.C.

We’ve already noted a major trend in knitwear this winter is towards the – for want of a better word – “hairy” side. This is exemplified by this shaggy alpaca blend cardigan from Milan’s Massimo Alba, which, with its oversized, slouchy design, is the perfect, heartwarming thing to wrap around yourself while reading a good book in front of the fire. Keep it relaxed with an ultra-soft cotton and cashmere mix T-shirt from The Lost Explorer (a dashing, artfully faded brand that is, incidentally, new to MR PORTER this week).

What else is there to say about this distinctive number from Gucci than “It’s got tigers all over it?” Simply put, if you like this particular big cat, you will like this cardigan, which also comes with a neat ribbed waistband in the Italian powerhouse’s trademark red and green stripes. Keep it eclectic (and channel the personal style of Gucci’s Mr Alessandro Michele) by accessorising with vintage-inspired jewellery – a bracelet from Mikia is just the ticket.
