THE JOURNAL

How to brave the chill in style.
If you go by meteorological standards, winter does not officially begin until 1 December. The astronomical calendar has it on 21 December. But, given that the clocks go back in the US this weekend, and we have already taken such measures in the UK, we can safely say that winter certainly feels like it is upon us. Whether that conjures up thoughts of Christmas and cosy evenings by the fire or drizzle and dark evenings is entirely up to you and your mindset. But, whatever your personal feelings towards the season, there are certain things that we all need to prepare. Below, we have selected 10 of them that should see you through.

A serious watch

Your iPhone may automatically wind back the time-saving hour, but what happens when the battery inevitably runs out? With Christmas around the corner, consider investing in a handsome watch, much like this Bell & Ross V2-93 (which, incidentally has a self-winding movement – just like your favourite Apple product).

The perfect winter coat

To see you through a cold season that could well last 4-5 months, you’ll need a coat with some serious weight behind it. So, call in the specialists and go for a hooded parka by Canada Goose - who have been keeping people warm since 1957.

A life-saving moisturiser

Now that the weather is being especially unkind to our extremities, a run of the mill moisturiser won’t cut it. Go for something with a bit more resilience to see you through these harsher conditions.

A jazzy jumper

You need to invest in knitwear in winter, so make sure you get something with a bit of life. The added benefit of this Fair Isle knit is that you have something to wear at your work Christmas party that doesn’t make you look like a boorish uncle.

A cosy candle

Not only does winter mean wearing more clothing, it also compels you to leave the house less, hunker down and avoid the cold. A candle or two does wonders for such a situation, especially one that smells as gorgeous as this.

A scarf

We stand by the protective qualities of the coat above, but there is never a substitute for a comfy scarf. Protect your neck, and go for some camel while you’re at it.

Sturdy boots

If you need to tackle wet conditions – or, perhaps worse when the snow comes – your loafers and sneakers won’t be up to the task. But there’s no need to pull on the wellies, or stay indoors. Red Wing have got you covered.

Winter shaving cream

If you’re man who likes to keep your beard at bay, you will know that shaving in winter does not become any kinder to your face. In fact, quite the opposite is true. Invest in a shaving cream, then, that’s up to the job.

Thick socks

The thin black socks you wear with your Oxfords won’t work well with your new boots. And you’ll need something with a bit more life for drearier days. In this case, Japanese brand Anonymous Ism is very much your friend.

A hip flask

Sometimes, when there’s a nip in the air, there’s nothing else for it. A nip of scotch will go a long way.
